1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 565
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Dr. Kern Wildenthal for his distinguished career and
4	4	inspiring leadership in the fields of medicine, education,
5	5	administration, and philanthropy; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Dr. Kern Wildenthal served as president of The
7	7	University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for 22 years
8	8	before his retirement in the fall of 2008; he was dean of the
9	9	graduate school for four years and dean of the medical school for
10	10	six years before becoming president in 1986; and
11	11	WHEREAS, His association with Southwestern began in 1960,
12	12	when he was admitted to the medical school at the age of 18; he
13	13	graduated in 1964, completed training in internal medicine and
14	14	cardiology, and earned a doctorate in cell physiology from the
15	15	University of Cambridge in 1970; and
16	16	WHEREAS, As president, Dr. Wildenthal guided Southwestern
17	17	Medical Center's exceptional growth and its ascendancy as one of
18	18	the top medical centers in the world through his visionary
19	19	leadership, his effectiveness in attracting superior talent to
20	20	the faculty, which includes several Nobel Prize winners, and his
21	21	ability to communicate the needs of the center to its
22	22	benefactors; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Dr. Wildenthal has published numerous scientific
24	24	papers, and he has received many awards over the years for his
25	25	professional and philanthropic efforts; he was elected to the
26	26	prestigious Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2008; and
27	27	WHEREAS, He has long been active in community organizations
28	28	and the arts; since retiring, he has increased his volunteer
29	29	leadership in Dallas and continues his work with the Southwestern
30	30	Medical Foundation; now, therefore, be it
31	31	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
32	32	Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Kern Wildenthal on his illustrious
33	33	and prolific career and his longtime commitment to The University
34	34	of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; and, be it further
35	35	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
36	36	him as an expression of highest regard from the Texas Senate.
