11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 565
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Dr. Kern Wildenthal for his distinguished career and
44 inspiring leadership in the fields of medicine, education,
55 administration, and philanthropy; and
66 WHEREAS, Dr. Kern Wildenthal served as president of The
77 University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for 22 years
88 before his retirement in the fall of 2008; he was dean of the
99 graduate school for four years and dean of the medical school for
1010 six years before becoming president in 1986; and
1111 WHEREAS, His association with Southwestern began in 1960,
1212 when he was admitted to the medical school at the age of 18; he
1313 graduated in 1964, completed training in internal medicine and
1414 cardiology, and earned a doctorate in cell physiology from the
1515 University of Cambridge in 1970; and
1616 WHEREAS, As president, Dr. Wildenthal guided Southwestern
1717 Medical Center's exceptional growth and its ascendancy as one of
1818 the top medical centers in the world through his visionary
1919 leadership, his effectiveness in attracting superior talent to
2020 the faculty, which includes several Nobel Prize winners, and his
2121 ability to communicate the needs of the center to its
2222 benefactors; and
2323 WHEREAS, Dr. Wildenthal has published numerous scientific
2424 papers, and he has received many awards over the years for his
2525 professional and philanthropic efforts; he was elected to the
2626 prestigious Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2008; and
2727 WHEREAS, He has long been active in community organizations
2828 and the arts; since retiring, he has increased his volunteer
2929 leadership in Dallas and continues his work with the Southwestern
3030 Medical Foundation; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3232 Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Kern Wildenthal on his illustrious
3333 and prolific career and his longtime commitment to The University
3434 of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3636 him as an expression of highest regard from the Texas Senate.
