| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Austin Aztex Football Club as it begins the 2009 |

| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The only professional soccer club in Austin, and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the city's preeminent professional sports franchise, the Aztex |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | were founded in 2008 by Phil Rawlins, who also has an ownership |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | interest in the Stoke City Football Club of the English Premier |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | League, one of the foremost soccer leagues in the world; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A member of the United Soccer Leagues First |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Division, the Aztex play an international schedule that includes |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | teams from Montreal, Vancouver, and Puerto Rico as well as teams |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | from across the United States; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Rawlins was named Top Sports Executive of the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Year by the Austin Chronicle in 2008, and head coach Adrian Heath |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | has 18 years of experience as a premier league player in England |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and Spain and 12 years of experience as a coach; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Aztex Under-23 team, playing in its inaugural |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | season in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 2008, won the Mid-South Division title with a record of 10-5-1; |

| 21 | 21 | | head coach Wolfgang Suhnholz was named Coach of the Year, Miguel |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Gallardo was named Goalkeeper of the Year, and Beto Papandrea was |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | named Defender of the Year, giving the Aztex three of the five |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | awards in the 67-team league; and |

| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The Austin Aztex Football Club has demonstrated |

| 26 | 26 | | great talent, discipline, and teamwork throughout the course of |

| 27 | 27 | | its inaugural season and looks forward to the future with |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | confidence and enthusiasm; now, therefore, be it |

| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Austin Aztex Football Club for |

| 31 | 31 | | providing Austin area fans with a superior level of sports |

| 32 | 32 | | competition and extend best wishes to the club for continued |
