5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Julia Joseph Sawyer, |
---|
7 | 7 | | who died March 30, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Austin to Joseph Joseph and Sophie |
---|
9 | 9 | | Daywood, Julia Joseph lived her life to the fullest and was a |
---|
10 | 10 | | source of strength to others; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, At an early age, Julia showed her |
---|
12 | 12 | | entrepreneurship; when she was 18 years old, she and her brother |
---|
13 | 13 | | opened Dixie Cream Donuts; she delivered donuts by driving a |
---|
14 | 14 | | truck around Austin, and she soon became known as the "Donut |
---|
15 | 15 | | Girl"; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Julia married Charles D. Sawyer, Jr., and after |
---|
17 | 17 | | World War II, the couple opened and operated Sonny's Place, also |
---|
18 | 18 | | called the "rock tavern," on Rosewood Avenue in Austin's |
---|
19 | 19 | | Eastside; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Charles passed away in July of 1953, and Julia |
---|
21 | 21 | | dedicated her life to her work as a homemaker and to raising her |
---|
22 | 22 | | three children; she was also a successful business woman who |
---|
23 | 23 | | worked hard in her tavern and encouraged others to open their own |
---|
24 | 24 | | businesses; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Julia was a founder and |
---|
26 | 26 | | benefactor of Our Lady's Maronite Parish, where she was a trustee |
---|
27 | 27 | | and a member of the Altar Society; at the National Maronite |
---|
28 | 28 | | Convention in San Diego in 2005, she was awarded the Gold |
---|
29 | 29 | | Massabki Award for her work in the Diocese of Our Lady of Lebanon; |
---|
30 | 30 | | she was a permanent member of the Order of Saint Sharbel; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, An exemplary lady, Julia was respected in the |
---|
32 | 32 | | community for her many accomplishments; known for her compassion |
---|
33 | 33 | | and generosity, Julia gave unselfishly of her time and energy to |
---|
34 | 34 | | others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be |
---|
35 | 35 | | forgotten by those who knew her; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Julia Sawyer was beloved by her family and |
---|
37 | 37 | | friends, and she leaves behind memories that will be deeply |
---|
38 | 38 | | treasured by all who were privileged to share in her life; now, |
---|
39 | 39 | | therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
42 | 42 | | family of Julia Joseph Sawyer; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
44 | 44 | | the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
---|
45 | 45 | | from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
---|
46 | 46 | | day, it do so in memory of Julia Joseph Sawyer. |
