44 Julia Joseph Sawyer
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Julia Joseph Sawyer,
77 who died March 30, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Austin to Joseph Joseph and Sophie
99 Daywood, Julia Joseph lived her life to the fullest and was a
1010 source of strength to others; and
1111 WHEREAS, At an early age, Julia showed her
1212 entrepreneurship; when she was 18 years old, she and her brother
1313 opened Dixie Cream Donuts; she delivered donuts by driving a
1414 truck around Austin, and she soon became known as the "Donut
1515 Girl"; and
1616 WHEREAS, Julia married Charles D. Sawyer, Jr., and after
1717 World War II, the couple opened and operated Sonny's Place, also
1818 called the "rock tavern," on Rosewood Avenue in Austin's
1919 Eastside; and
2020 WHEREAS, Charles passed away in July of 1953, and Julia
2121 dedicated her life to her work as a homemaker and to raising her
2222 three children; she was also a successful business woman who
2323 worked hard in her tavern and encouraged others to open their own
2424 businesses; and
2525 WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Julia was a founder and
2626 benefactor of Our Lady's Maronite Parish, where she was a trustee
2727 and a member of the Altar Society; at the National Maronite
2828 Convention in San Diego in 2005, she was awarded the Gold
2929 Massabki Award for her work in the Diocese of Our Lady of Lebanon;
3030 she was a permanent member of the Order of Saint Sharbel; and
3131 WHEREAS, An exemplary lady, Julia was respected in the
3232 community for her many accomplishments; known for her compassion
3333 and generosity, Julia gave unselfishly of her time and energy to
3434 others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be
3535 forgotten by those who knew her; and
3636 WHEREAS, Julia Sawyer was beloved by her family and
3737 friends, and she leaves behind memories that will be deeply
3838 treasured by all who were privileged to share in her life; now,
3939 therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4141 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4242 family of Julia Joseph Sawyer; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
4545 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
4646 day, it do so in memory of Julia Joseph Sawyer.
