44 Thomas S. Goggan III
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Thomas S. Goggan III,
77 who died March 21, 2009, at the age of 65; and
88 WHEREAS, Thomas S. Goggan was born in Dallas on February
99 21, 1944, to Marion and Thomas S. Goggan, Jr.; he grew up in San
1010 Antonio and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1962;
1111 he earned a combined bachelor of arts and bachelor of laws degree
1212 from The University of Texas at Austin in 1967; and
1313 WHEREAS, For the first 14 years of his career, he practiced
1414 criminal and civil law, and he represented some of Austin's most
1515 illustrious citizens and argued cases before the United States
1616 Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States
1717 Supreme Court; and
1818 WHEREAS, He was a founding partner of the law firm of
1919 Linebarger, Goggan, Blair, and Sampson; he coauthored the
2020 Matthew Bender text on ad valorem taxation, and he was an active
2121 member of the State Bar of Texas; he taught classes for
2222 continuing legal education and served on the Administration of
2323 Justice and Administrative Law committees; and
2424 WHEREAS, His talent for litigation served his firm well,
2525 and he continued to represent clients in complex tax cases to the
2626 end of his career; and
2727 WHEREAS, Those who knew Thomas Goggan will long remember
2828 him for his boundless intellectual curiosity and the intensity
2929 with which he embraced life; he was an avid reader and especially
3030 enjoyed the great works of world literature and political
3131 histories; and
3232 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
3333 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
3434 forever by his family and his many friends; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3636 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3737 family of Thomas S. Goggan III: his wife, Dianne Goggan; his
3838 daughters and sons-in-law, Ingrid and Vasileios Lelos and Rachel
3939 Goggan and Travis Indgjer; his grandchildren, Pericles and
4040 Anastasia Lelos and Rowan and Abigail Indgjer; and his sister,
4141 Susan Goggan; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4444 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4545 memory of Thomas S. Goggan III.
