5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Thomas S. Goggan III, |
---|
7 | 7 | | who died March 21, 2009, at the age of 65; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Thomas S. Goggan was born in Dallas on February |
---|
9 | 9 | | 21, 1944, to Marion and Thomas S. Goggan, Jr.; he grew up in San |
---|
10 | 10 | | Antonio and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1962; |
---|
11 | 11 | | he earned a combined bachelor of arts and bachelor of laws degree |
---|
12 | 12 | | from The University of Texas at Austin in 1967; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, For the first 14 years of his career, he practiced |
---|
14 | 14 | | criminal and civil law, and he represented some of Austin's most |
---|
15 | 15 | | illustrious citizens and argued cases before the United States |
---|
16 | 16 | | Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States |
---|
17 | 17 | | Supreme Court; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, He was a founding partner of the law firm of |
---|
19 | 19 | | Linebarger, Goggan, Blair, and Sampson; he coauthored the |
---|
20 | 20 | | Matthew Bender text on ad valorem taxation, and he was an active |
---|
21 | 21 | | member of the State Bar of Texas; he taught classes for |
---|
22 | 22 | | continuing legal education and served on the Administration of |
---|
23 | 23 | | Justice and Administrative Law committees; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, His talent for litigation served his firm well, |
---|
25 | 25 | | and he continued to represent clients in complex tax cases to the |
---|
26 | 26 | | end of his career; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Those who knew Thomas Goggan will long remember |
---|
28 | 28 | | him for his boundless intellectual curiosity and the intensity |
---|
29 | 29 | | with which he embraced life; he was an avid reader and especially |
---|
30 | 30 | | enjoyed the great works of world literature and political |
---|
31 | 31 | | histories; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
33 | 33 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
34 | 34 | | forever by his family and his many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
37 | 37 | | family of Thomas S. Goggan III: his wife, Dianne Goggan; his |
---|
38 | 38 | | daughters and sons-in-law, Ingrid and Vasileios Lelos and Rachel |
---|
39 | 39 | | Goggan and Travis Indgjer; his grandchildren, Pericles and |
---|
40 | 40 | | Anastasia Lelos and Rowan and Abigail Indgjer; and his sister, |
