| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the Galena Park Independent School District in paying |

| 4 | 4 | | tribute to Dr. Shirley J. Williamson, former Texas Commissioner |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | of Education, on the occasion of the dedication of the Dr. |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Shirley J. Williamson Elementary School, which is being named in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | her honor; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Shirley J. Williamson has spent much of her life |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | involved in the Galena Park Independent School District as a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | student, teacher, administrator, and superintendent; she began |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | her education at Pyburn Elementary School in 1954 and graduated |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | from Galena Park High School in 1966; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, After earning a degree at the University of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Houston, she began her career as a first grade teacher in the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Pasadena Independent School District in 1971, but her emotional |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | ties to Galena Park had her returning to the school district in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | 1975 as a teacher for MacArthur Elementary School; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Williamson's leadership skills were evident, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and she was soon taking on administrative responsibilities; she |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | became assistant principal in 1977 and principal of MacArthur |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Elementary School in 1979; she was named principal at Green |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Valley Elementary School in 1984 and director of elementary |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | education for the district in 1986; she became assistant |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | superintendent for pupil services in 1992 and the district's |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | first female superintendent in 1995; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, She was known then as Dr. Shirley J. Neeley, and her |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | contagious energy and enthusiasm, combined with an unrelenting |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | desire to ensure that every student in the Galena Park |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Independent School District achieved his or her highest |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | potential, led the district to unprecedented academic |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | achievement; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The naming of the Dr. Shirley J. Williamson |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Elementary School is a tribute to one of Galena Park's most |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | esteemed educational leaders and an expression of the gratitude |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | of its citizens for her hard work, her commitment, and her |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | perseverance in the pursuit of educational excellence; now, |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Shirley J. Williamson for her |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | many contributions to education in this state and extend to her |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | congratulations on being honored by the Galena Park Independent |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | School District; and, be it further |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
