| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Winkler County and Texans across the state |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | in celebrating Winkler County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1887 from territory in Tom Green |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | County, Winkler County is named for Clinton M. Winkler, a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Confederate colonel; the county was officially organized on |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | April 5, 1910, with Kermit chosen as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Originally populated by the Anasazi Indians, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Winkler County was later home to the Apache and Comanche Indian |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | tribes drawn by the ready availability of water; the first |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | military expeditions entered the area in the mid-19th century |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | under the command of Captain Randolph Marcy, who was searching |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | for the best route to California; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Winkler County experienced its first boom when |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the Texas Legislature enacted a law allowing the sale of state |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | school lands in West Texas; the discovery of oil in the 1920s at |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the Hendrick Number 1 site set off a second expansion of the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | population, and the town of Wink was established at this time; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Winkler County remains a center for oil |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | production, as well as a hub for ranching; its people are rightly |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | proud of their impact on our state and their involvement in its |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | rich history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Winkler County for |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | their many contributions to our state and extend to them best |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | wishes for a memorable Winkler County Day at the State Capitol; |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
