11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 615
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the citizens of Winkler County and Texans across the state
44 in celebrating Winkler County Day at the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Established in 1887 from territory in Tom Green
66 County, Winkler County is named for Clinton M. Winkler, a
77 Confederate colonel; the county was officially organized on
88 April 5, 1910, with Kermit chosen as the county seat; and
99 WHEREAS, Originally populated by the Anasazi Indians,
1010 Winkler County was later home to the Apache and Comanche Indian
1111 tribes drawn by the ready availability of water; the first
1212 military expeditions entered the area in the mid-19th century
1313 under the command of Captain Randolph Marcy, who was searching
1414 for the best route to California; and
1515 WHEREAS, Winkler County experienced its first boom when
1616 the Texas Legislature enacted a law allowing the sale of state
1717 school lands in West Texas; the discovery of oil in the 1920s at
1818 the Hendrick Number 1 site set off a second expansion of the
1919 population, and the town of Wink was established at this time;
2020 and
2121 WHEREAS, Today, Winkler County remains a center for oil
2222 production, as well as a hub for ranching; its people are rightly
2323 proud of their impact on our state and their involvement in its
2424 rich history; now, therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2626 Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Winkler County for
2727 their many contributions to our state and extend to them best
2828 wishes for a memorable Winkler County Day at the State Capitol;
2929 and, be it further
3030 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3131 them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
