2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Many citizens of Van Zandt County have come to the |

3 | 3 | | State Capitol on February 4, 2009, to celebrate the significant |
---|
4 | 4 | | part they and their forebears have played in the development of |
---|
5 | 5 | | the Lone Star State; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Created by an Act of the Texas Legislature on |
---|
7 | 7 | | March 20, 1847, this Northeast Texas county was named for Isaac |
---|
8 | 8 | | Van Zandt, a Republic of Texas lawyer, legislator, and diplomat; |
---|
9 | 9 | | and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Canton, the county seat, was laid out in 1850 and |
---|
11 | 11 | | incorporated in 1919; recently named a Main Street City, it is |
---|
12 | 12 | | home to the Van Zandt County Fair and First Monday Trade Days, one |
---|
13 | 13 | | of the country's best-known flea markets; a library of genealogy |
---|
14 | 14 | | and local history is also a popular attraction and preserves much |
---|
15 | 15 | | of the county's notable heritage; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The development of this fascinating area can be |
---|
17 | 17 | | traced in a number of other communities as well; Edgewood, |
---|
18 | 18 | | settled in the 1840s, boasts the Edgewood Heritage Park Museum, a |
---|
19 | 19 | | facility dedicated to the preservation of the rural culture and |
---|
20 | 20 | | architectural history of our state; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Edom, established in 1856, is one of the oldest |
---|
22 | 22 | | towns in the county, and its past is highlighted by 10 state |
---|
23 | 23 | | historical markers, many of them researched by members of the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Edom Historical Society; the residents of this small community |
---|
25 | 25 | | also give vital support to an active civic theater; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Fruit cultivation prompted the naming of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Fruitvale, where a nursery operated as early as the 1870s; |
---|
28 | 28 | | several generations in this century-old town have treasured the |
---|
29 | 29 | | Randall Store, a local institution since 1910; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Grand Saline, originally called Jordan's Saline, |
---|
31 | 31 | | the first Van Zandt County seat, takes its name from an immense |
---|
32 | 32 | | dome of pure salt lying beneath the city; more than a mile and a |
---|
33 | 33 | | half wide and 20,000 feet thick, the deposit is presently mined |
---|
34 | 34 | | by Morton Salt Company; the city celebrates salt with an annual |
---|
35 | 35 | | Salt Festival; those exploring this 2004 Main Street City can |
---|
36 | 36 | | tour the Salt Palace Museum, a unique structure built with rock |
---|
37 | 37 | | salt crystal, stop by the historical marker that commemorates |
---|
38 | 38 | | native son Wiley Post, the renowned pioneer aviator, and visit |
---|
39 | 39 | | the new Veterans Memorial Wall Park, featuring a genuine United |
---|

---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Van, established in 1891, remained a quiet |
---|
42 | 42 | | farming community until 1929, when the discovery of oil nearby |

43 | 43 | | transformed the village into a boomtown; the Van Area Oil and |

44 | 44 | | Historical Museum recaptures the excitement of that frenetic |
---|
45 | 45 | | time and commemorates the discovery with an annual Oil Festival; |

47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, Wills Point, settled in 1873 and originally known |

48 | 48 | | as Iola, was renamed for William Wills, whose cabin served as a |

49 | 49 | | stopping place for those traveling between Shreveport and |

50 | 50 | | Dallas; the Wills cabin still stands, as does the Texas and |
---|
51 | 51 | | Pacific Railroad depot, which houses the Historical Society |
---|
52 | 52 | | Museum; Wills Point, which is officially the Bluebird Capital of |
---|
53 | 53 | | Texas, hosts the annual Bluebird Festival; and |
---|
54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, Ben Wheeler, surrounded by natural springs and |
---|
55 | 55 | | rich farmland, was named for Van Zandt County's first mail |
---|
56 | 56 | | carrier, Benjamin R. Wheeler, in 1876; and |
---|
57 | 57 | | WHEREAS, Martins Mill, which got its name from Dan R. |
---|
58 | 58 | | Martin's gristmill, was established in 1880 and is home to one of |
---|
59 | 59 | | the largest dairies in East Texas; the community survived |
---|
60 | 60 | | destruction by tornadoes and fires and today boasts a successful |
---|
61 | 61 | | school district; and |
---|
62 | 62 | | WHEREAS, Major events in the county include the Texas State |
---|
63 | 63 | | Bluegrass Festival, the Edom Arts Fair, and the Van Zandt County |
---|
64 | 64 | | Relay for Life; for the outdoor enthusiast, the Neches and Sabine |
---|
65 | 65 | | Rivers, Purtis Creek State Park, and Lake Tawakoni State Park |
---|
66 | 66 | | offer wonderful opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, |
---|
67 | 67 | | and camping; and |
---|
68 | 68 | | WHEREAS, The home of nearly 53,000 people, Van Zandt County |
---|
69 | 69 | | relies on tourism, oil, and agribusiness; the area is a major |
---|
70 | 70 | | producer of hay, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and nursery crops, |
---|
71 | 71 | | in addition to cattle, horses, hogs, and dairy products; and |
---|
72 | 72 | | WHEREAS, Present with us today in the Capitol are numerous |
---|
73 | 73 | | residents of Van Zandt County, including the Van Zandt County |
---|
74 | 74 | | Choir, city and county officials, members of Vision 2009, and |
---|
75 | 75 | | members of the board of the Council of Van Zandt County |
---|
76 | 76 | | Communities, the sponsors of the biennial visit to the state |
---|
77 | 77 | | legislature that provides an occasion for focusing on |
---|
78 | 78 | | legislation affecting Van Zandt County citizens; and |

79 | 79 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Van Zandt County take justifiable |
---|
80 | 80 | | pride in the hard work and ready cooperation that have made their |
---|
81 | 81 | | county strong, and it is a pleasure to join them in honoring the |
---|
82 | 82 | | county they call home; now, therefore, be it |
---|
83 | 83 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

84 | 84 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 4, 2009, as Van Zandt |
