| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas recognizes the |

| 3 | 3 | | week of April 20 through April 26, 2009, as Deep Vein Thrombosis |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Awareness Week in Texas; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Deep vein thrombosis, a serious medical |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | condition, affects approximately two million Americans every |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | year; complications from this usually preventable medical |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | condition take up to 200,000 American lives each year; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | forms in one of the large veins, usually in the lower limbs, which |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | leads to partially or completely blocked circulation and may |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | result in a fatal pulmonary embolism; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Pulmonary embolism causes more deaths each year |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | than breast cancer and AIDS combined and is the leading cause of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | maternal death associated with childbirth; fatal pulmonary |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | embolism may be the most preventable cause of hospital death in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the United States; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Some of the risk factors for deep vein thrombosis |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | include cancer and certain heart or respiratory diseases; the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | condition can also be triggered by hospitalization, pregnancy, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | obesity, or restricted mobility caused by long-distance travel; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, According to a survey conducted by the American |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Public Health Association, 74 percent of Americans are unaware of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | deep vein thrombosis; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the importance of raising public |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | awareness of the threat and causes of deep vein thrombosis and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | designate the week of April 20 through April 26, 2009, as Deep |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Vein Thrombosis Awareness Week; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | support of Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Week. |
