11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 674
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the Texas Retired Teachers Association and pay tribute
44 to this state's public educators, who provide an invaluable
55 service to the people of the State of Texas; and
66 WHEREAS, The Texas Retired Teachers Association represents
77 retired public education employees--1,100 of whom are presently
88 gathering in Dallas for their 56th annual convention; and
99 WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Retired Teachers
1010 Association continually work to improve their local communities
1111 throughout the state; they have given from their hearts almost
1212 five million hours of volunteer service, with a value equivalent
1313 to more than $97 million; and
1414 WHEREAS, Retired educators volunteer in schools and
1515 promote lifelong learning by providing books to children through
1616 the Children's Book Project; more than 462,000 books have been
1717 donated so far, including almost 82,000 last year alone; and
1818 WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Retired Teachers
1919 Association are conscious of the effect their health has on the
2020 world around them and work to preserve the TRS-Care program by
2121 reducing doctor visits through their participation in the
2222 Walks-A-Million Program, in which they have collectively taken
2323 more than 28 billion steps toward greater wellness; and
2424 WHEREAS, Retiree annuity payments from the Teacher
2525 Retirement System of Texas have exceeded $6 billion, directly
2626 creating 84,300 jobs in the Lone Star State; and
2727 WHEREAS, The Texas Retired Teachers Association and its
2828 nearly 70,000 members work diligently to protect current and
2929 future public education retirees; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Texas, 81st Legislature,
3131 hereby commend the Texas Retired Teachers Association for its
3232 outstanding work and recognize the week of March 29 through April
3333 4, 2009, as Texas Retired Teachers Week; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3535 the association as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
