1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 674
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the Texas Retired Teachers Association and pay tribute
4	4	to this state's public educators, who provide an invaluable
5	5	service to the people of the State of Texas; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Texas Retired Teachers Association represents
7	7	retired public education employees--1,100 of whom are presently
8	8	gathering in Dallas for their 56th annual convention; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Retired Teachers
10	10	Association continually work to improve their local communities
11	11	throughout the state; they have given from their hearts almost
12	12	five million hours of volunteer service, with a value equivalent
13	13	to more than $97 million; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Retired educators volunteer in schools and
15	15	promote lifelong learning by providing books to children through
16	16	the Children's Book Project; more than 462,000 books have been
17	17	donated so far, including almost 82,000 last year alone; and
18	18	WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Retired Teachers
19	19	Association are conscious of the effect their health has on the
20	20	world around them and work to preserve the TRS-Care program by
21	21	reducing doctor visits through their participation in the
22	22	Walks-A-Million Program, in which they have collectively taken
23	23	more than 28 billion steps toward greater wellness; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Retiree annuity payments from the Teacher
25	25	Retirement System of Texas have exceeded $6 billion, directly
26	26	creating 84,300 jobs in the Lone Star State; and
27	27	WHEREAS, The Texas Retired Teachers Association and its
28	28	nearly 70,000 members work diligently to protect current and
29	29	future public education retirees; now, therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Texas, 81st Legislature,
31	31	hereby commend the Texas Retired Teachers Association for its
32	32	outstanding work and recognize the week of March 29 through April
33	33	4, 2009, as Texas Retired Teachers Week; and, be it further
34	34	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
35	35	the association as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
