SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 676 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Texas musicians across the state and recognize April 26, 2009, as Texas Music Awards Day in Texas; and WHEREAS, The annual Texas Music Awards is the outgrowth of a website that began in 2000 to help Texas artists sell their music online; the online retail site grew rapidly and soon included hundreds of members; and WHEREAS, The first music awards were presented in 2003; in 2005 the Academy of Texas Music, Incorporated, was formed to oversee the awards program and to offer membership to all Texas artists; the academy is a nonprofit organization whose mission is artist recognition, education, scholarship, and the assistance of artists in need; and WHEREAS, The academy promotes worldwide recognition and perpetuation of Texas music and the musicians of the Lone Star State; it provides and enhances music education through various venues and scholarships and promotes professional equity; and WHEREAS, The Texas Music Awards provide formal recognition of the talents of musicians and other artistic professionals in the Texas music industry; this year's event is being held at the Palestine Civic Center and Michael Martin Murphey will perform; members of the academy, the retail website, and the music industry are commended for their efforts to further the interests of Texas music; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby recognize April 26, 2009, as Texas Music Awards Day in Texas and extend to all affiliated with the awards show best wishes for a successful event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to commemorate Texas Music Awards Day in Texas.
