| 3 | 3 | | join the Communities In Schools State Advisory Committee in |

| 4 | 4 | | establishing a new category for a Best of Texas Award in honor of |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | former Texas Senator Gonzalo Barrientos; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Through his leadership and advocacy for youth, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Senator Barrientos has contributed significantly to the dropout |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | prevention movement, bringing heightened awareness to the issue |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | and to the needs of students, families, and communities; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Senator Barrientos has championed Communities In |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Schools for more than 20 years; he sponsored the first |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Communities In Schools legislation and served on the Communities |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | In Schools National Board of Directors; today, he continues to |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | share his time with the organization as board chair of the state |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | advisory committee; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The new Best of Texas Award will be named the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Gonzalo Barrientos Lifetime Achievement Award in Dropout |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Prevention and will honor individuals in Texas who have |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | distinguished themselves in the field of dropout prevention |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | through their vision, commitment, and leadership; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Setting an outstanding example of generosity and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | dedication in behalf of Texas students, Senator Barrientos |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | himself has been named the award's first recipient; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, A quality education is vital in order for our |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | children and youth to become successful adults, and by working to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | enhance Communities In Schools services, Senator Barrientos has |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | helped to ensure a brighter future for all young Texans; now, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |

| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |

| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby establish the Gonzalo Barrientos Lifetime |

| 32 | 32 | | congratulations to Senator Gonzalo Barrientos on being selected |
