1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 697
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join the citizens of Houston and Texans throughout the state in
4	4	celebrating Texas Southern University Day at the Capitol on April
5	5	27, 2009; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Founded in 1947, Texas Southern University now
7	7	celebrates 62 years of educational excellence and commitment to
8	8	providing opportunity for higher education to all; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Texas Southern University is the second-largest
10	10	of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United
11	11	States; the university has opened its doors to higher education
12	12	for over 11,000 students from throughout the State of Texas and
13	13	around the country; and
14	14	WHEREAS, As an open-enrollment institution, Texas Southern
15	15	University remains committed to its historical mission of
16	16	offering opportunities for higher education to underserved
17	17	students; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Texas Southern University has conferred over
19	19	48,000 degrees since its inception more than 60 years ago; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall
21	21	School of Law has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report
22	22	magazine as the "most diverse law school" in the nation; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Texas Southern University trains the majority of
24	24	teachers for the Houston Independent School District, the
25	25	largest school district in the State of Texas; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Among Houston's African American citizens, one in
27	27	six has attended Texas Southern University; most of the African
28	28	American pharmacists in the State of Texas have also attended the
29	29	university; and
30	30	WHEREAS, The Texas Southern University National Alumni
31	31	Association represents thousands of active and concerned alumni
32	32	in 14 chapters nationwide; and
33	33	WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Southern University
34	34	National Alumni Association and the members of the Texas Southern
35	35	University Student Government Association are traveling to
36	36	Austin on April 27, 2009, to visit with members of the Texas
37	37	Senate and the Texas House of Representatives and to express
38	38	their support for a strong and independent Texas Southern
39	39	University for the benefit of higher education in Texas; now,
40	40	therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
42	42	Legislature, hereby congratulate the Texas Southern University
43	43	community on its many contributions to our state and declare
44	44	April 27, 2009, Texas Southern University Day at the State
45	45	Capitol; and, be it further
46	46	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
47	47	the Texas Southern University National Alumni Association
48	48	president and the Texas Southern University Student Government
49	49	Association president as an expression of high regard from the
50	50	Texas Senate.
