11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 701
22 WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Burnet County are gathering in
33 Austin on April 23, 2009, to celebrate Burnet County Day at the
44 State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Situated among the scenic lakes and hills of the
66 Texas Hill Country, Burnet County was organized by the 4th Texas
77 Legislature in 1852 and named for David G. Burnet, president of
88 the provisional government of the Republic of Texas; the county
99 seat was established in the town of Hamilton, which changed its
1010 name to Burnet in 1858; and
1111 WHEREAS, The county's economy was originally dependent on
1212 agriculture, but the harnessing of the Colorado River by the
1313 Lower Colorado River Authority beginning in the 1930s and the
1414 creation of the Highland Lakes helped turn Burnet County into a
1515 popular recreational and vacation destination, and residents and
1616 visitors from all across the Lone Star State enjoy swimming,
1717 boating, fishing, and camping on Lakes Buchanan, Inks, Lyndon B.
1818 Johnson, and Travis; and
1919 WHEREAS, Bird-watchers and amateur astronomers are drawn
2020 by the Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park; the Hill Country Flyer
2121 train ride and the Vanishing Texas River Cruise offer tours of
2222 the county's scenic wonders, and visitors to Longhorn Cavern
2323 State Park delight in the scenic grottoes and rich history of
2424 this unique attraction; and
2525 WHEREAS, The vast dome of Granite Mountain supplied the
2626 stone used in the construction of the State Capitol and a number
2727 of state office buildings and county courthouses, as well as for
2828 the Galveston seawall; and
2929 WHEREAS, Texas Tech University at Highland Lakes and
3030 Central Texas College provide opportunities for higher education
3131 for the rapidly growing population in the area, and the Fort
3232 Croghan Museum in Burnet and the Falls on the Colorado Museum in
3333 Marble Falls help to preserve the county's heritage; and
3434 WHEREAS, Blessed with a region of great beauty and a rich
3535 history, the residents of Burnet County may take great pride in
3636 their unique contribution to the story of the Lone Star State;
3737 now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3939 Legislature, hereby recognize April 23, 2009, as Burnet County
4040 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
4141 sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable visit to
4242 Austin.
