| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Burnet County are gathering in |

| 3 | 3 | | Austin on April 23, 2009, to celebrate Burnet County Day at the |

| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated among the scenic lakes and hills of the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Texas Hill Country, Burnet County was organized by the 4th Texas |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Legislature in 1852 and named for David G. Burnet, president of |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the provisional government of the Republic of Texas; the county |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | seat was established in the town of Hamilton, which changed its |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | name to Burnet in 1858; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The county's economy was originally dependent on |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | agriculture, but the harnessing of the Colorado River by the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Lower Colorado River Authority beginning in the 1930s and the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | creation of the Highland Lakes helped turn Burnet County into a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | popular recreational and vacation destination, and residents and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | visitors from all across the Lone Star State enjoy swimming, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | boating, fishing, and camping on Lakes Buchanan, Inks, Lyndon B. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Johnson, and Travis; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Bird-watchers and amateur astronomers are drawn |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | by the Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park; the Hill Country Flyer |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | train ride and the Vanishing Texas River Cruise offer tours of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the county's scenic wonders, and visitors to Longhorn Cavern |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | State Park delight in the scenic grottoes and rich history of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | this unique attraction; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The vast dome of Granite Mountain supplied the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | stone used in the construction of the State Capitol and a number |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | of state office buildings and county courthouses, as well as for |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the Galveston seawall; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Texas Tech University at Highland Lakes and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Central Texas College provide opportunities for higher education |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | for the rapidly growing population in the area, and the Fort |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Croghan Museum in Burnet and the Falls on the Colorado Museum in |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Marble Falls help to preserve the county's heritage; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with a region of great beauty and a rich |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | history, the residents of Burnet County may take great pride in |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | their unique contribution to the story of the Lone Star State; |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 23, 2009, as Burnet County |
