55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of retired Colonel Thomas R. Parsons, who
77 died March 23, 2009, at the age of 80; and
88 WHEREAS, Thomas Parsons was born October 19, 1928, in
99 Luann, Arkansas; following his graduation from Texas A&M
1010 University in 1949, he embarked on a career in the United States
1111 Army that saw him rise to the rank of colonel and took him to
1212 numerous postings around the world, including service in the
1313 Korean and Vietnam Wars; and
1414 WHEREAS, In 1971 Colonel Parsons became commandant of the
1515 Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University, where he served the
1616 longest term in history as an active duty officer; during his
1717 tenure, he helped establish a mounted unit, which was named the
1818 Parsons Mounted Cavalry in his honor and continues in existence
1919 today; and
2020 WHEREAS, Following his retirement in 1977, Colonel Parsons
2121 remained at the university as Director of Safety and Traffic for
2222 seven years; and
2323 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
2424 gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued
2525 counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
2626 WHEREAS, Colonel Parsons was a devoted husband and father,
2727 and he will continue to live in the hearts and minds of those he
2828 left behind; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3030 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3131 family of Colonel Thomas R. Parsons: his beloved wife, Graciela;
3232 his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Paul; his son, Phil; his
3333 granddaughter and her husband, Barbara and Matt; his grandson,
3434 Russell; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Joyce; and his
3535 stepson and family, Carlos and Bridget Evans and their children,
3636 Austin and Morgan; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3939 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4040 memory of Colonel Thomas R. Parsons.
