2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Mary J. Worrel on the grand occasion of her 80th |
---|
4 | 4 | | birthday on April 28, 2009; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Juarez Kumi Jeter was born April 28, 1929, in a |
---|
6 | 6 | | boxcar in Van Alstyne, Texas, to Arthur Ambrose "Daddy Doc" Jeter |
---|
7 | 7 | | and Jewell Duffy Jeter; she was raised in Alabama, and as a |
---|
8 | 8 | | teenager, she took the audacious step of renaming herself "Mary"; |
---|
9 | 9 | | and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, While still in her teens, she became a military |
---|
11 | 11 | | wife, and by the age of 29, she had lived in various places around |
---|
12 | 12 | | the world, including Japan and England, and was the mother of six |
---|
13 | 13 | | children; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, She moved to Austin in the early 1960s, soon |
---|
15 | 15 | | became a widow, and then blossomed as an entrepreneur back in the |
---|
16 | 16 | | days when a woman was not allowed to sign a contract without her |
---|
17 | 17 | | husband's name on it; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Her first venture into business was to purchase a |
---|
19 | 19 | | rental home after reading a library book on real estate; she also |
---|
20 | 20 | | served as an employee at the Jet Drive-In and proceeded to become |
---|
21 | 21 | | both its owner and manager and quite the lady of independent |
---|
22 | 22 | | means; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, She married Colonel Albert A. Worrel, retired, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and became mother of two "change of life" babies; she went on to |
---|
25 | 25 | | acquire and manage many rental properties, became widowed again, |
---|
26 | 26 | | and after years of so-called retirement, she began her current |
---|
27 | 27 | | work as a sample lady for Sam's Club, where she is known by all as |
---|
28 | 28 | | "the flower hat lady"; she also manages to find time to pursue her |
---|
29 | 29 | | talent as an artist and has taken classes in oil painting for 20 |
---|
30 | 30 | | years; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Noted for her charm and intrepid spirit, Mary |
---|
32 | 32 | | Worrel is beloved by her family and many friends and is an |
---|
33 | 33 | | exemplary lady whose energy and zest for life serve as an |
---|
34 | 34 | | inspiration to others; she loves her work at Sam's Club, but she |
---|
35 | 35 | | only plans to work there for 20 more years; her greatest joy is her |
---|
36 | 36 | | two young grandchildren, Albert and Flora; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby commend Mary J. Worrel on her many |
---|
39 | 39 | | accomplishments and successes throughout her life and extend |
---|
40 | 40 | | heartfelt congratulations to her on the joyful occasion of her |
---|
41 | 41 | | 80th birthday; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

43 | 43 | | Mary Worrel, the distinguished lady of the flowered hat. |
