11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 707
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Mary J. Worrel on the grand occasion of her 80th
44 birthday on April 28, 2009; and
55 WHEREAS, Juarez Kumi Jeter was born April 28, 1929, in a
66 boxcar in Van Alstyne, Texas, to Arthur Ambrose "Daddy Doc" Jeter
77 and Jewell Duffy Jeter; she was raised in Alabama, and as a
88 teenager, she took the audacious step of renaming herself "Mary";
99 and
1010 WHEREAS, While still in her teens, she became a military
1111 wife, and by the age of 29, she had lived in various places around
1212 the world, including Japan and England, and was the mother of six
1313 children; and
1414 WHEREAS, She moved to Austin in the early 1960s, soon
1515 became a widow, and then blossomed as an entrepreneur back in the
1616 days when a woman was not allowed to sign a contract without her
1717 husband's name on it; and
1818 WHEREAS, Her first venture into business was to purchase a
1919 rental home after reading a library book on real estate; she also
2020 served as an employee at the Jet Drive-In and proceeded to become
2121 both its owner and manager and quite the lady of independent
2222 means; and
2323 WHEREAS, She married Colonel Albert A. Worrel, retired,
2424 and became mother of two "change of life" babies; she went on to
2525 acquire and manage many rental properties, became widowed again,
2626 and after years of so-called retirement, she began her current
2727 work as a sample lady for Sam's Club, where she is known by all as
2828 "the flower hat lady"; she also manages to find time to pursue her
2929 talent as an artist and has taken classes in oil painting for 20
3030 years; and
3131 WHEREAS, Noted for her charm and intrepid spirit, Mary
3232 Worrel is beloved by her family and many friends and is an
3333 exemplary lady whose energy and zest for life serve as an
3434 inspiration to others; she loves her work at Sam's Club, but she
3535 only plans to work there for 20 more years; her greatest joy is her
3636 two young grandchildren, Albert and Flora; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3838 Legislature, hereby commend Mary J. Worrel on her many
3939 accomplishments and successes throughout her life and extend
4040 heartfelt congratulations to her on the joyful occasion of her
4141 80th birthday; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 Mary Worrel, the distinguished lady of the flowered hat.
