11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 71
22 WHEREAS, Civic leaders from Hardin, Jasper, Newton, and
33 Tyler Counties are gathering in Austin to celebrate Southeast
44 Texas Days at the State Capitol from January 25 through 27, 2009;
55 and
66 WHEREAS, Home to scenic waterways and the dense forest
77 known as the Big Thicket, this unique region of the Lone Star
88 State is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world,
99 with 85 species of trees, approximately 1,000 species of
1010 flowering plants, and more than 180 varieties of birds; and
1111 WHEREAS, The history of this verdant region is equally
1212 rich, a saga stretching from the days when Atakapa, Caddo, and
1313 Alabama-Coushatta hunted bear amid the pines and cypress,
1414 through the rise of the lumber industry in the late 1800s and the
1515 oil boom of the early 20th century; today, Southeast Texas is
1616 home to many friendly, forward-looking communities that are
1717 building an even brighter future on the foundation laid by those
1818 who came before; and
1919 WHEREAS, Under the leadership of the Lumberton, Silsbee,
2020 and Kountze Chambers of Commerce and economic development
2121 corporations, Hardin County is encouraging business growth and
2222 diversifying its economy to encompass manufacturing,
2323 agriculture, and tourism; in addition to the many new residents
2424 who have made their homes here in recent years, the county draws a
2525 host of visitors who come especially to hike and go birding in the
2626 Big Thicket National Preserve and to enjoy the exciting annual
2727 MusicFest; and
2828 WHEREAS, Timber and oil undergird the economy of Jasper
2929 County, where the fine opportunities for fishing and boating on
3030 Lake Sam Rayburn and B. A. Steinhagen Lake lure vacationers from
3131 across the state; the Jasper and Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of
3232 Commerce is working to expand the county's business resources,
3333 while the Jasper Economic Development Corporation has created a
3434 500-acre industrial park adjacent to a county-owned airport with
3535 a mile-long runway; in the southern part of the county, the Buna
3636 Chamber of Commerce welcomes everyone to the "small town with a
3737 big heart"; and
3838 WHEREAS, Picturesque Newton County, with its forested
3939 hills and valleys, offers residents and visitors alike fine
4040 boating, fishing, hiking, and birding at Toledo Bend Reservoir
4141 and Wild Azalea Canyons; the Newton Economic and Community
4242 Development Corporations are providing recently established and
4343 longtime businesses with vital support, and the Newton County
4444 Chamber of Commerce has led in renovating the courthouse square
4545 and upgrading the county's fiber-optic network; and
4646 WHEREAS, Tyler County is a prime destination for hikers,
4747 boaters, birders, and fishermen, with two state parks and access
4848 to B. A. Steinhagen Lake and sections of the Big Thicket National
4949 Preserve; in the spring, Woodville, the county seat, hosts the
5050 popular Tyler County Dogwood Festival, which includes the
5151 Festival of the Arts and the Western Weekend rodeo and dance;
5252 among its other endeavors, the Tyler County Chamber of Commerce
5353 is engaged in promoting the county to those who are looking for a
5454 desirable place to retire; and
5555 WHEREAS, Conveniently close to Beaumont and Houston and
5656 blessed with great natural beauty and abundant resources, the
5757 counties of Hardin, Jasper, Newton, and Tyler make up a
5858 distinctive region of the Lone Star State, and their hardworking
5959 citizens can take great pride in their heritage, achievements,
6060 and enterprising spirit; now, therefore, be it
6161 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
6262 Legislature, hereby recognize January 25 through 27, 2009, as
6363 Southeast Texas Days at the State Capitol and extend to the
6464 visiting delegation sincere best wishes for a memorable and
6565 meaningful stay in Austin.
