2	2	WHEREAS, Civic leaders from Hardin, Jasper, Newton, and
3	3	Tyler Counties are gathering in Austin to celebrate Southeast
4	4	Texas Days at the State Capitol from January 25 through 27, 2009;
5	5	and
6	6	WHEREAS, Home to scenic waterways and the dense forest
7	7	known as the Big Thicket, this unique region of the Lone Star
8	8	State is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world,
9	9	with 85 species of trees, approximately 1,000 species of
10	10	flowering plants, and more than 180 varieties of birds; and
11	11	WHEREAS, The history of this verdant region is equally
12	12	rich, a saga stretching from the days when Atakapa, Caddo, and
13	13	Alabama-Coushatta hunted bear amid the pines and cypress,
14	14	through the rise of the lumber industry in the late 1800s and the
15	15	oil boom of the early 20th century; today, Southeast Texas is
16	16	home to many friendly, forward-looking communities that are
17	17	building an even brighter future on the foundation laid by those
18	18	who came before; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Under the leadership of the Lumberton, Silsbee,
20	20	and Kountze Chambers of Commerce and economic development
21	21	corporations, Hardin County is encouraging business growth and
22	22	diversifying its economy to encompass manufacturing,
23	23	agriculture, and tourism; in addition to the many new residents
24	24	who have made their homes here in recent years, the county draws a
25	25	host of visitors who come especially to hike and go birding in the
26	26	Big Thicket National Preserve and to enjoy the exciting annual
27	27	MusicFest; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Timber and oil undergird the economy of Jasper
29	29	County, where the fine opportunities for fishing and boating on
30	30	Lake Sam Rayburn and B. A. Steinhagen Lake lure vacationers from
31	31	across the state; the Jasper and Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of
32	32	Commerce is working to expand the county's business resources,
33	33	while the Jasper Economic Development Corporation has created a
34	34	500-acre industrial park adjacent to a county-owned airport with
35	35	a mile-long runway; in the southern part of the county, the Buna
36	36	Chamber of Commerce welcomes everyone to the "small town with a
37	37	big heart"; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Picturesque Newton County, with its forested
39	39	hills and valleys, offers residents and visitors alike fine
40	40	boating, fishing, hiking, and birding at Toledo Bend Reservoir
41	41	and Wild Azalea Canyons; the Newton Economic and Community
42	42	Development Corporations are providing recently established and
43	43	longtime businesses with vital support, and the Newton County
44	44	Chamber of Commerce has led in renovating the courthouse square
45	45	and upgrading the county's fiber-optic network; and
46	46	WHEREAS, Tyler County is a prime destination for hikers,
47	47	boaters, birders, and fishermen, with two state parks and access
48	48	to B. A. Steinhagen Lake and sections of the Big Thicket National
49	49	Preserve; in the spring, Woodville, the county seat, hosts the
50	50	popular Tyler County Dogwood Festival, which includes the
51	51	Festival of the Arts and the Western Weekend rodeo and dance;
52	52	among its other endeavors, the Tyler County Chamber of Commerce
53	53	is engaged in promoting the county to those who are looking for a
54	54	desirable place to retire; and
55	55	WHEREAS, Conveniently close to Beaumont and Houston and
56	56	blessed with great natural beauty and abundant resources, the
57	57	counties of Hardin, Jasper, Newton, and Tyler make up a
58	58	distinctive region of the Lone Star State, and their hardworking
59	59	citizens can take great pride in their heritage, achievements,
60	60	and enterprising spirit; now, therefore, be it
61	61	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
62	62	Legislature, hereby recognize January 25 through 27, 2009, as
63	63	Southeast Texas Days at the State Capitol and extend to the
64	64	visiting delegation sincere best wishes for a memorable and
65	65	meaningful stay in Austin.
