| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens |

| 3 | 3 | | across our country who are observing World Meningitis Day by |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | recognizing April 25, 2009, as Texas Meningitis Awareness Day; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The two types of meningitis are bacterial |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | meningitis and viral meningitis; bacterial meningitis is a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | serious, potentially deadly disease that can progress very |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | quickly; a person may die in a period of only eight to 24 hours |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | after contracting infection; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Bacterial meningitis is an inflammation of the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord; the disease |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | strikes 2,000 to 3,000 Americans each year, and 10 to 12 percent |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | of those infected die; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The rate of the invasive disease among persons 17 |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | to 20 years of age is twice that of the rate of the general United |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | States population, which leads to five to 15 deaths among college |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | students every year; among those who survive meningococcal |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | disease, 20 percent live with severe health problems; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Adolescent vaccination would reduce direct costs |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | of the disease by $18 million and decrease productivity losses by |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | $50 million; vaccination would save lives and prevent the health |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | problems and disabilities caused by the bacterium, such as brain |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | damage, kidney failure, and epilepsy; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature, hereby urge all Texans to observe April 25 as Texas |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Meningitis Awareness Day and encourage public enlightenment |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | regarding vaccination that would reduce the occurrence of this |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | deadly disease; and, be it further |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | recognition of Texas Meningitis Awareness Day. |
