SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 723 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Ralph Poteet High School Band from Mesquite on its selection by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to receive the Sudler Flag of Honor award for 2008; and WHEREAS, Awarded to high school concert bands who have maintained a high standard of musical excellence over a period of several years, the Sudler Flag of Honor is the highest recognition a high school band can achieve; each year, only a few bands in the nation receive this prestigious honor; and WHEREAS, In order to qualify for this coveted award, a band must have superior ratings in competition and must have taken part in significant regional, state, and national performance events; the band program must further offer participants a complete and balanced program of musical activities, including the concert, solo and ensemble, and marching areas; and WHEREAS, Under the expert direction of band director Scott Coulson, the Ralph Poteet High School Band has consistently exhibited these qualities and is truly deserving of this singular honor; the band will receive the distinctive flag that symbolizes this honor at a presentation ceremony during a concert by the band on May 19, 2009, at the Anne Poteet Auditorium; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend band director Scott Coulson and the members of the Ralph Poteet High School Band on their hard work, dedication, and exemplary musicianship and extend congratulations to them on receiving the Sudler Flag of Honor; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the band as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
