| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the Fort Bend Independent School District, the students, |

| 4 | 4 | | faculty, and staff of Christa McAuliffe Middle School, and Texans |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | across the state in celebrating January 28, 2009, as Christa |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | McAuliffe Day; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Known as the first teacher in space, Christa |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | McAuliffe was a civilian mission specialist aboard the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Challenger space shuttle, whose mission was tragically cut short |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | by an explosion shortly after launch on January 28, 1986; she |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | left behind a legacy of determination, courage, cooperation, and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the enthusiasm and commitment to strive for the seemingly |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | unattainable; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Christa |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | McAuliffe Middle School were recently put to the test of those |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | values when their school suffered severe damage as a result of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Hurricane Ike; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Christa McAuliffe Middle School community |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | persevered through its hardships, making a three-day transition |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | to another school building for classes and maintaining a spirit |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | of cooperation while awaiting the repairs on their own building; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, It is truly fitting that all Texans pay tribute to |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the life and legacy of Christa McAuliffe and acknowledge her |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | contributions as a teacher, a pioneer, and an exemplary role |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | model; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and staff of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Christa McAuliffe Middle School on their resolve and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | determination and extend to them best wishes for a memorable |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Christa McAuliffe Day; and, be it further |

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
