11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 76
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Emilio "Ray" Aguirre, who has been selected for the
44 Texas Community Health Network's first annual Unsung Heroes
55 Award; and
66 WHEREAS, Ray Aguirre graduated from Sidney Lanier High
77 School in 1946 and joined the United States Marines; he served
88 honorably until 1947, when he was placed in the Marine Corps
99 Reserve; and
1010 WHEREAS, He was called to active duty in August of 1950
1111 during the Korean Conflict and fought against the Chinese in the
1212 Battle at the Chosin Valley Reservoir, where he was wounded and
1313 endured severe frostbite; he received the Purple Heart, retired
1414 with 100 percent disability, and subsequently wrote about his
1515 experiences in the book, We'll Be Home for Christmas; and
1616 WHEREAS, He began civilian life in 1951 as a sheet metal
1717 worker; he was curator for the Museum of Aerospace Medicine at
1818 Brooks Air Force Base; a talented artist, he became a medical
1919 book illustrator, and he painted a picture depicting the first
2020 man on the moon that still stands inside the historic Brooks City
2121 Base Hangar 9; and
2222 WHEREAS, He was a founder of the San Antonio Chapter of the
2323 Chosin Few and a member of the Purple Heart Association and
2424 Disabled American Veterans Association; he is past president of
2525 Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9186; he designed and directed the
2626 building of the Korean War Veterans Memorial that stands in front
2727 of the Municipal Auditorium; and
2828 WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father of four, Ray Aguirre
2929 has long been a respected leader in his community, active in
3030 youth athletics and fundraising for various causes; in
3131 retirement, he has served as a volunteer for the Memorial
3232 Detachment Service at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery; and
3333 WHEREAS, Heroes are those individuals who inspire us by
3434 their courage, sacrifice, and perseverance in facing challenges;
3535 Ray Aguirre exemplifies the true spirit of heroism through his
3636 service, his allegiance, and his commitment to helping others; he
3737 is indeed worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3939 Legislature, hereby commend Emilio "Ray" Aguirre for his loyalty
4040 and selfless service to others and congratulate him on being
4141 selected for the Texas Community Health Network's first annual
4242 Unsung Heroes Award; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 him as an expression of highest regard from the Texas Senate.
