| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the American Heart Association in recognizing February 6, |

| 4 | 4 | | 2009, as National Wear Red Day in Texas; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are the nation's leading |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | cause of death, and stroke is the third leading cause of death; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the direct and indirect costs of cardiovascular diseases in the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | United States, including strokes, are estimated at $475 billion |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | for the year 2008; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of some |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 455,000 American women each year; more women die of heart |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | disease, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease than of the next |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | five leading causes of death combined, including all cancers; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Women account for 53 percent of deaths from |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | cardiovascular disease and 61 percent of deaths from strokes; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | however, only 21 percent of women regard cardiovascular disease |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | as their greatest health risk; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Go Red For Women is the American Heart |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Association's national call to increase awareness about heart |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | disease and to inspire women to take charge of their heart |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | health; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, American Heart Month is observed during the month |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of February, and Wear Red Day on February 6, 2009, is an |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | opportunity for all citizens to show their support for women in |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the fight against heart disease; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby designate February 6, 2009, as National Wear |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Red Day in Texas and encourage women and the men who care about |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | them to wear red on that day to help increase awareness about |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | women's risk for cardiovascular disease and to show support for |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | women who are taking charge of their heart health and reducing |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | their risks; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |

| 34 | 34 | | commemoration of National Wear Red Day. |
