99 relating to the computation of public high school grade point
1010 averages.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Section 28.0252, Education Code, is amended by
1313 amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsections (a-1), (a-2), (a-3),
1414 and (b-1) to read as follows:
1515 (a) The commissioner may develop a standard method of
1616 computing a student's high school grade point average that provides
1717 for additional weight to be given to each honors course, advanced
1818 placement course, international baccalaureate course, or dual
1919 credit course completed by a student. Any standard method
2020 developed under this subsection must be consistent with the
2121 requirements of Subsection (a-1).
2222 (a-1) A school district that computes a student's high
2323 school grade point average in a manner that provides for additional
2424 weight to be given to any of the following types of courses
2525 completed by a student shall provide for the same weight to be given
2626 to all of the following types of courses completed by a student:
2727 (1) an honors course;
2828 (2) an advanced placement course; or
2929 (3) a dual credit course other than a physical
3030 education course.
3131 (a-2) A school district may provide that additional weight
3232 is given to a course other than the courses provided by Subsection
3333 (a-1), except that a district may not provide additional weight for
3434 a dual credit physical education course.
3535 (a-3) A student's grade point average computed in the manner
3636 provided by Subsection (a-1) and any additional weight determined
3737 by the district as provided by Subsection (a-2) shall be used in
3838 determining the student's eligibility for automatic college
3939 admission under Sections 51.803 and 51.804.
4040 (b-1) Subsection (a-1) applies only to students entering
4141 grade nine during or after the 2011-2012 school year. This
4242 subsection expires September 1, 2015.
4343 SECTION 2. Section 51.807(a), Education Code, is amended to
4444 read as follows:
4545 (a) Except as provided by Section 28.0252(a-3), the [The]
4646 Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board may adopt rules relating
4747 to the operation of admissions programs under this subchapter,
4848 including rules relating to the identification of eligible
4949 students.
5050 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
5151 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
5252 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
5353 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
5454 Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
