77 relating to the transfer of certain vehicle registrations at the
88 time of sale of the vehicle.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 502.451, Transportation Code, is amended
1111 by amending Subsections (a), (a-1), and (c) and adding Subsection
1212 (a-2) to read as follows:
1313 (a) On the sale or transfer of a motor vehicle to a dealer,
1414 as defined by Section 503.001, who holds a general distinguishing
1515 number issued under Chapter 503, the dealer shall remove each
1616 license plate and the registration insignia issued for the motor
1717 vehicle. The registration period remaining at the time of sale or
1818 transfer expires at the time of sale or transfer.
1919 (a-1) On the sale of a used motor vehicle by a dealer, the
2020 dealer shall issue to the buyer new registration documents for an
2121 entire registration year.
2222 (a-2) On a sale or transfer of a motor vehicle to a person
2323 that does not hold a general distinguishing number issued under
2424 Chapter 503, the seller or transferor may remove each license plate
2525 and the registration insignia issued for the motor vehicle.
2626 (c) On a sale or transfer of a motor vehicle in which neither
2727 party holds a general distinguishing number issued under Chapter
2828 503, the [The] part of the registration period remaining at the time
2929 of the sale or transfer shall continue with the vehicle being sold
3030 or transferred and does not transfer with the license plates or
3131 registration validation insignia. To continue the remainder of
3232 the registration period, the purchaser or transferee must file the
3333 documents required under Section 520.031.
3434 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
