H.C.R. No. 49 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The first program of its kind in the United States, Austin Energy Green Building is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011; and WHEREAS, The Green Building program encourages Central Texans to design and construct sustainable homes and buildings that are economical, efficient, healthy, safe, and beneficial for the community and the planet; by providing rating systems, influencing construction codes, developing energy and building policy, and educating residents and homebuilders, the endeavor serves as a model for green building initiatives nationwide; and WHEREAS, Since 2005, the Green Building program has rated more than 4,000 homes and saved participants more than $3.8 million in energy costs and the structures involved in the initiative have conserved more than 69 million gallons of water and diverted more than 120,000 tons of waste from landfills; and WHEREAS, Austin Energy Green Building has been recognized with awards from the National Association of Homebuilders and the U.S. Green Building Council; and WHEREAS, The sound policies promoted by Austin Energy Green Building are worthy of strong support, and the success of this program has contributed to the high quality of life in the Austin community and set a positive example for other cities across the country; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commemorate the 20th anniversary of Austin Energy Green Building and commend all those associated with the program for their outstanding work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Austin Energy as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
