H.C.R. No. 53 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Viola Vasquez Milan of Midland is celebrating her 40th year as a public school teacher in Texas in 2011, making this a fitting opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of this outstanding educator; and WHEREAS, A fourth-generation Texan, Mrs. Milan was born in Fort Stockton in 1949, and she graduated from St. Edward's University in Austin in 1971; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Milan began her distinguished career as a teacher in 1971, and she married Raymundo Milan in 1973; along with her husband, she helped establish one of the state's first bilingual programs in the Crystal City Independent School District; and WHEREAS, In 1974, Mrs. Milan joined the Midland Independent School District, and for the past 37 years, she has distinguished herself as a Spanish teacher at San Jacinto Junior High School; during her exemplary tenure, her students have regularly outscored other junior high and high school students in Midland on their final examinations and have taken top honors at many regional foreign language competitions; and WHEREAS, In addition to her classroom duties, Mrs. Milan coached girls' volleyball, basketball, and track and field, guiding and inspiring her teams to numerous district championships; she also participated actively in the GEAR UP college preparatory program, helping students pursue their dream of a college education; over the years, many of her former students have gone on to succeed, and a number are now lawyers, neurosurgeons, professional athletes, and elected officials; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Milan is a woman of strong religious faith, and she has been a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Midland for more than three decades; she has also been a member of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association, the St. Edward's University Alumni Association, and The University of Texas Longhorn Foundation; and WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Mrs. Milan has enjoyed the love and support of her husband of 38 years, retired Midland ISD administrator Raymundo Milan, as well as that of her children, Melina Milan Cannon, Rey Milan, and Melissa Milan, and her extended family; and WHEREAS, For 40 years and counting, Viola Milan has enlightened and inspired countless West Texas students with her dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence, and she may indeed take great pride in all that she has accomplished and all the lives she has touched as she celebrates this special anniversary; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor Viola Vasquez Milan for her four decades of service as a schoolteacher in Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Milan as an expression of high regard by the 82nd Texas Legislature.
