8 | 8 | | unspoiled and inviting getaways is the picturesque Lake Whitney |

10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Located in the Brazos River Basin, Lake Whitney was |
---|
11 | 11 | | one of the earliest recreational lakes built near the Dallas/Fort |
---|
12 | 12 | | Worth area; completed in April 1951 as part of the Brazos River |
---|
13 | 13 | | Conservation and Reclamation Program, it is maintained by the |
---|
14 | 14 | | United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, and is |
---|
15 | 15 | | situated five miles from the town of Whitney on the edge of Hill and |
---|
16 | 16 | | Bosque Counties; other nearby communities that help provide |
---|
17 | 17 | | visitors with the comforts of home include Hillsboro, Clifton, |
---|
18 | 18 | | Meridian, Aquilla, Morgan, Lakeside Village, Laguna Park, Blum, |
---|
19 | 19 | | Valley Mills, and Kopperl; and |

20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The 955-acre Lake Whitney State Park features |

21 | 21 | | campsites, screened shelters, swimming beaches, boat ramps, and an |
---|
22 | 22 | | air strip; the region also provides full service marinas and a broad |
---|
23 | 23 | | range of overnight accommodations; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Lake Whitney's reputation as a premier location to |
---|
25 | 25 | | catch bass and catfish is a big draw for the nation's fishing |
---|
26 | 26 | | enthusiasts, and the lake has received positive coverage from |
---|
27 | 27 | | national sporting publications; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, For those who prefer their recreation on land, the |
---|
29 | 29 | | area is home to a number of golf courses and 3,000 acres of winding |
---|
30 | 30 | | trails for horseback riding; bird and wildlife watchers can delight |
---|
31 | 31 | | in the lake area's 300 migratory and nonmigratory bird species, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | a local wildlife population that features more than 50 different |
---|
33 | 33 | | species of mammals, including the white-tailed deer; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Historically visited by everyone from Native |
---|
35 | 35 | | Americans and European settlers to gunslingers, such as John Wesley |
---|
36 | 36 | | Hardin, the Lake Whitney area is today easily accessible from major |
---|
37 | 37 | | metropolitan areas of the state, making it the perfect getaway for |
---|
38 | 38 | | those who enjoy a relaxed pace and abundant amenities; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, The 79th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | designated the Lake Whitney area as the Getaway Capital of Texas in |
---|
41 | 41 | | 2005 in recognition of its myriad attractions; this outstanding |
---|
42 | 42 | | destination remains as enjoyable as ever, and it is indeed fitting |
---|
43 | 43 | | that this official title be continued; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | hereby redesignate the Lake Whitney area as the Getaway Capital of |
---|
46 | 46 | | Texas. |
