55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Texas is widely known for its excellent recreational
77 activities and vacation destinations, and among the state's most
88 unspoiled and inviting getaways is the picturesque Lake Whitney
99 area; and
1010 WHEREAS, Located in the Brazos River Basin, Lake Whitney was
1111 one of the earliest recreational lakes built near the Dallas/Fort
1212 Worth area; completed in April 1951 as part of the Brazos River
1313 Conservation and Reclamation Program, it is maintained by the
1414 United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, and is
1515 situated five miles from the town of Whitney on the edge of Hill and
1616 Bosque Counties; other nearby communities that help provide
1717 visitors with the comforts of home include Hillsboro, Clifton,
1818 Meridian, Aquilla, Morgan, Lakeside Village, Laguna Park, Blum,
1919 Valley Mills, and Kopperl; and
2020 WHEREAS, The 955-acre Lake Whitney State Park features
2121 campsites, screened shelters, swimming beaches, boat ramps, and an
2222 air strip; the region also provides full service marinas and a broad
2323 range of overnight accommodations; and
2424 WHEREAS, Lake Whitney's reputation as a premier location to
2525 catch bass and catfish is a big draw for the nation's fishing
2626 enthusiasts, and the lake has received positive coverage from
2727 national sporting publications; and
2828 WHEREAS, For those who prefer their recreation on land, the
2929 area is home to a number of golf courses and 3,000 acres of winding
3030 trails for horseback riding; bird and wildlife watchers can delight
3131 in the lake area's 300 migratory and nonmigratory bird species, and
3232 a local wildlife population that features more than 50 different
3333 species of mammals, including the white-tailed deer; and
3434 WHEREAS, Historically visited by everyone from Native
3535 Americans and European settlers to gunslingers, such as John Wesley
3636 Hardin, the Lake Whitney area is today easily accessible from major
3737 metropolitan areas of the state, making it the perfect getaway for
3838 those who enjoy a relaxed pace and abundant amenities; and
3939 WHEREAS, The 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
4040 designated the Lake Whitney area as the Getaway Capital of Texas in
4141 2005 in recognition of its myriad attractions; this outstanding
4242 destination remains as enjoyable as ever, and it is indeed fitting
4343 that this official title be continued; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas
4545 hereby redesignate the Lake Whitney area as the Getaway Capital of
4646 Texas.
