 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and
 meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the loved ones of
 Barrett Martin Havran of Fort Worth, who passed away on March 14,
 2011, at the age of 31; and
 WHEREAS, Born on June 6, 1979, in Fort Worth, Barrett Havran
 was the son of Joy Ann and Robert Havran; he attended Fort Worth
 Country Day School, where he excelled in academics, theater, and
 athletics; in both football and track, he was selected captain and
 most valuable athlete; popular among his peers, he was elected
 Homecoming King in 1997; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Havran graduated the following year and earned a
 track and field scholarship to The University of Texas at Austin;
 during his undergraduate career, he became the 9th ranked
 decathlete in school history, ranking 18th in the nation; captain
 of track and field and a four-year decathlete letterman, he was
 honored with the Lan Hewlett Award, given to the athlete with the
 highest cumulative grade point average of any graduating letterman;
 in addition, he was named to the Big XII First All-Academic Team as
 well as the UT Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his four
 years of college; and
 WHEREAS, Despite his many academic and athletic activities,
 Mr. Havran found time to participate in the Delta Tau Delta
 fraternity and to serve as UT national coordinator and
 representative to the National Convention of the American Marketing
 Association; he earned his bachelor's degree from the McCombs
 School of Business in May 2002, ranking in the top 15 percent of his
 class; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Havran went on to attend the Southern Methodist
 University Dedman School of Law; a talented mock trial participant,
 he was the on-campus champion and a two-time member of and regional
 finalist on the American Trial Lawyers Mock Trial Team; moreover,
 he was part of the National Championship White Collar Crime Mock
 Trial Team and was named top advocate of the competition in
 Washington, D.C.; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Havran was also a member of the school's
 National Negotiation Team and voting council and a representative
 to the Student Bar Association; he earned a number of honors,
 including the titles of SMU Outstanding Advocate and Locke Liddell &
 Sapp Negotiation Winner and election to the Order of Barristers,
 Master Level; and
 WHEREAS, While pursuing his juris doctorate, Mr. Havran
 coached at both St. Mark's and the Hockaday Schools of Dallas and
 worked for Sommerman & Quesada, LLP, where he continued on after
 graduating and being admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 2006; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Havran was a member of the Dallas Bar
 Association and the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, through
 which he was elected to the Foundation and Leadership Class and
 served as co-chair of the Ask-A-Lawyer committee; he was selected
 as an associate member of the Patrick E. Higginbotham American Inn
 of Court, and he taught mock trial courses and coached the mock
 trial team at SMU, where his dedication led the Board of Advocates
 to honor him with the Outstanding Coach of the Year award in 2009;
 and
 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan returned to Fort Worth in recent
 years, working in seasoned loan acquisitions at Doss, Knight &
 Associates and Texas Bank and as the principal of Havran Law; in
 addition, he taught classes in trial advocacy and techniques and
 advised the mock trial team at Texas Wesleyan School of Law; and
 WHEREAS, Committed to giving back to his fellow residents, he
 was a devoted mentor and served on the board of Big Brothers Big
 Sisters of North Texas; his efforts also benefited the United Way
 Income Council, Downtown Fort Worth Rotary Club, and Ridotto Club;
 in his free time, he enjoyed waterskiing and boating with his family
 and friends on Lake Granbury and cheering on The University of Texas
 football team; and
 WHEREAS, Barrett Havran touched countless lives with his
 kindness, enthusiasm, and ever-present smile; while his death
 brings immeasurable sorrow to many, he leaves behind a legacy that
 will long be treasured by all who held him dear; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Barrett Martin Havran
 and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his
 parents, Joy Ann and Bob Havran; to his brother, Blake Havran; to
 his grandmother, Joy Weaver; to his grandparents, Ed and Muriel
 Havran; to his special girlfriend, Christine Powers; and to his
 other relatives and friends; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Barrett
 Martin Havran.
