H.R. No. 1091 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A traumatic brain injury occurs every 23 seconds in the United States; and WHEREAS, Traumatic brain injuries can have debilitating effects on brain functionality, including thinking, reasoning, memory, and communication; and WHEREAS, Those who suffer traumatic brain injuries may face years of rehabilitation, therapy, and recovery; and WHEREAS, The families, friends, coworkers, and communities of those who suffer traumatic brain injuries suffer alongside the victims of the actual injuries; and WHEREAS, Life may never be the same for an individual who has suffered a traumatic brain injury; and WHEREAS, A concussion is a type of brain injury that can interrupt the regular function of the brain; and WHEREAS, Approximately 3.8 million sports-related and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year; and WHEREAS, Approximately 135,000 sports-related and recreation-related traumatic brain injuries occur among children ages 5 to 18 each year; and WHEREAS, Increasing prevention and early diagnosis requires raising awareness about the causes, symptoms, and effects of traumatic brain injury; and WHEREAS, The month of March has been designated as Brain Injury Awareness Month in order to further the Brain Injury Association's ongoing commitment to advocacy and education regarding concussions and other traumatic brain injuries; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby recognize the month of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness of traumatic brain injury among all Texans, but particularly among those most at risk for suffering this serious and potentially life-altering injury.
