H.R. No. 1127 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 2010-2011 season was indeed memorable for the Georgetown High School girls' basketball team, as the Lady Eagles compiled 33 wins and advanced all the way to the University Interscholastic League Class 5A state final; and WHEREAS, The year began with exciting news for the program as Krystal Forthan signed a letter of intent to attend Louisiana State University, and fellow senior Briana Bogard did the same with East Tennessee State University; and WHEREAS, The Lady Eagles won their first 7 games and 17 of their first 18, including two contests in which they held opponents to just 8 and 12 points, respectively; the team's early success also included a triumphant outing at the Winnsboro Hoop Fest, where Georgetown downed Bullard High School to hoist the trophy; and WHEREAS, In late December, the Lady Eagles traveled to Antioch, California, to participate in the West Coast Jamboree; playing against some of the toughest teams in that state, Georgetown High opened the tournament with a victory over Presentation High School of San Jose and then topped the previously unbeaten girls from Del Oro High School of Loomis; in the semifinals, the squad lost a tough game against Long Beach Polytechnic High School, then ranked second in the nation; and WHEREAS, Back in the Lone Star State, the winning continued; on January 25, the Lady Eagles defeated Leander High School to give head coach Rhonda Farney her 900th career victory, and by season's end her total had grown to 910; since she began guiding the Georgetown team in 1988, the Lady Eagles have amassed an impressive 617-176 record and have never had a losing year; and WHEREAS, Georgetown High went undefeated against its District 16-5A opponents in 2010-2011 and finished the season with a school record 32-game district winning streak; in mid-February, the Lady Eagles began their thrilling run through the 5A playoffs, knocking off five straight opponents to earn their spot in the state tournament in Austin; there, they bested Elsik High School in the semifinals before falling to Irving MacArthur in the title game to finish as runner-up; and WHEREAS, There were many individual honors for the Lady Eagles; Ms. Forthan was selected to play in the McDonald's All-American game in Chicago and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association/Nike All-America Game in Indianapolis; in addition, she, Ms. Bogard, and Emily Johnson were named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A All-State team; on the district level, Ms. Forthan was named most valuable player and Ms. Bogard, Ms. Johnson, Amanda Bizzell, and Kaitlin Walla were all named to the first team, while Ms. Farney was named coach of the year; and WHEREAS, Winning with a true team effort, the Lady Eagles also received valuable contributions from the other members of the roster: Elizabeth Kniffin, Katie Youngblood, Astrid Roman, Misty Walden, Lauren Ferrell, Cassie Vick, Lorrie Santoy, Bree Smith, Meghan White, and Alex Larsen; Coach Farney was ably assisted by Kellye Richardson, Dave Walla, Jordan Ramey, and Kristin Curtis; and WHEREAS, The talented and dedicated student-athletes of the Lady Eagles basketball team are a source of great pride to their many supporters in the community, and their outstanding performance on the court is most deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Georgetown High School girls' basketball team on its successful 2010-2011 season and extend sincere best wishes to the team's players, coaches, and staff for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
