H.R. No. 1243 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Veteran Texas photojournalist Harry Cabluck has enjoyed an extraordinary career that has spanned more than half a century; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cabluck's passion for photography began after visiting his uncle's darkroom when he was in the sixth grade; he went on to gain experience as a member of the newspaper and yearbook staffs at North Side High School in Fort Worth; at the same time, he began to take forensic photographs of vehicles involved in accidents, which he was alerted to because of his family's wrecker business; and WHEREAS, In the late 1950s, Mr. Cabluck joined the Fort Worth Star-Telegram; he covered John F. Kennedy's fateful visit to Texas in November 1963, taking some of the last images of the president when he was in Fort Worth and later riding in his motorcade in Dallas; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cabluck joined the Associated Press in 1969 and worked in Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio, before returning to his home state; throughout his 40-year tenure, he photographed 10 presidents, 2 Olympics, and countless Super Bowl, World Series, and national championship games; among his iconic shots are Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris with his "Immaculate Reception" during a 1972 play-off game--a photo that later graced a cereal box--and jubilant Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk after a home run that won the first game of the 1975 World Series; Mr. Cabluck was known for his quick moves on the field while covering baseball, earning him the nickname "Dancing Bear"; and WHEREAS, Since being posted to Austin in 1989, Mr. Cabluck has photographed numerous elected officials, including former governor George W. Bush, Governor Rick Perry, and most members of the Texas Legislature, as well as plenty of Texas Longhorns football games; since December 2009, he has worked freelance, and he shoots a range of subjects throughout Texas as his quest for the perfect photograph continues; and WHEREAS, During his decades behind the camera, Mr. Cabluck has won the respect and admiration of his fellow photojournalists, many of whom he has mentored in what is affectionately called the Cabluck School of Photography; he is famous for the massive 800-millimeter Ernst Leitz lens that he has carried around for more than half his career in spite of its 32-pound heft; and WHEREAS, Through his images, Harry Cabluck has informed, moved, and delighted people across Texas and the nation, and the Lone Star State is proud to claim this hardworking and talented photographer as a native son; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby commend Harry Cabluck on his half-century of service as a photojournalist and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Cabluck as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
