H.R. No. 1271 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Texas is fortunate to have passionate and engaged residents like Golda Marie Foster, whose dedication to the preservation of our state's history is an inspiration to all who know her; and WHEREAS, Ms. Foster has been a member of the Tom Green County Historical Commission for 26 years and has been its chair since 1989; she has testified before a number of committees of the Texas House of Representatives in support of preservation issues such as cemetery protection and has been a frequent speaker at the Texas Historical Commission's annual conferences; and WHEREAS, Her love and appreciation of the past have been of benefit to area residents who have been educated and entertained by the award-winning programs she has spearheaded; with the help of her commission colleagues, she has staged events that include the 175th anniversary of the Texas Revolution, the Battle of Dove Creek reunion, a welcoming celebration for Desert Storm veterans, the centennial of the city of San Angelo, the 60th anniversary of World War II, and the 125th and 135th anniversaries of Tom Green County; and WHEREAS, In a typical year, Ms. Foster and the other members of the county historical commission volunteer more than 5,000 hours, undertaking such labors of love as preserving local cemeteries, coordinating tours of historical sites, giving workshops, and planning celebrations; one of the organization's recent projects was the creation of local history CDs for use in area schools; and WHEREAS, Ms. Foster's devotion to serving her community is reflected in the long list of groups to which she belongs or in which she holds office: the Texas Motor Transportation Association, the Concho Valley Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Fort Concho Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the San Angelo Celebration Bridge Design Committee, and Downtown San Angelo, Inc., which she served as president; in addition, she was the first female member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of San Angelo, is a member of the board of directors of Texas Forts Trail, and is part of the advisory board of the Friends of Fairmount Cemetery; and WHEREAS, Long respected for the quality of her work, Ms. Foster has been honored with several commendations from the Texas Historical Commission: the Distinguished Service Award, the Texan Award for Individual Achievement and Commitment to Historical Preservation, and the John Ben Shepperd County Historical Commission Leadership Award; moreover, she is the recipient of the Concho Valley Vietnam Veterans Service Award for her efforts to record the history of veterans and the NAACP Community Spirit Award; and WHEREAS, Through her vision and dedication, Golda Foster has helped preserve the history and culture of Tom Green County, fostering pride among area residents and allowing them to better understand their Texas heritage; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby commend Golda Marie Foster for her achievements in the area of historical preservation and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Foster as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
