H.R. No. 1314 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Those Texans who give of their time and talents to benefit the larger community make the world a better place through their actions, and Aurora A. Garza of Kingsville, who passed away on March 13, 2011, at the age of 86, was indeed one such person; and WHEREAS, A dedicated educator, administrator, and civic leader, Mrs. Garza was born in Kingsville on July 1, 1924, to Antonia Saenz Alvarez and Adan Alvarez, Sr.; she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M University--Kingsville and began her notable career in 1945, teaching first and third grades in Kingsville public schools; and WHEREAS, In 1952, Mrs. Garza relocated to Corpus Christi, where she continued teaching elementary students for nearly two decades; admired for her leadership, she served as Title VII consultant for the district and as parent involvement coordinator at Lozano Elementary School; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Garza left the classroom after nearly three decades to become principal of Kennedy Elementary School in the West Oso Independent School District in 1972; she went on to direct Harvey Elementary School in Kingsville ISD in the same capacity from 1979 until her retirement in 1986; and WHEREAS, A leader in her profession, Mrs. Garza helped to develop curriculum for the West Oso district and served on textbook subcommittees for the state; she shared her time with the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, Texas Association of School Administrators, National Education Association, Texas State Teachers Association, and Kingsville Tri-City Retired Teachers Association, which she served as president; and WHEREAS, Equally impressive was her involvement in a number of worthwhile community organizations; she was active with the boards of the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra, Music Club of Kingsville, Lions Club, and Friends of the Conner Museum; in addition, she chaired the board of the FLAIR Department of the Woman's Club of Kingsville and worked with the City of Kingsville Historical Development Board; while in Corpus Christi, her efforts benefited the Symphony Guild and the Beautification Committee; and WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a person's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark on the world as they move through it, and Aurora Garza's contributions to her community will long resonate in the lives of all who knew her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Aurora A. Garza and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to her sister, America Alvarez Wilson, and her husband, James; to her sister-in-law, Blanca C. Alvarez; to her nieces and nephews, Thelma, Michelle, Marissa, Ana-Alicia, Elaine, Sandra, Carol, Karl, and James; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Aurora Garza.
