 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Students at Grandview Hills Elementary School in
 Austin participated in the Pennies for Peace charitable initiative
 from February 14 through March 4, 2011; and
 WHEREAS, Pennies for Peace is an international
 service-learning program that gives children in impoverished
 countries access to education while helping students in the U.S.
 and other developed nations to become more engaged global citizens;
 by collecting pennies for children their age in Pakistan and
 Afghanistan, students learn the rewards of sharing and working
 together to bring hope and educational opportunities to young
 people in other parts of the world; and
 WHEREAS, Grandview Hills Elementary first took part in the
 Pennies for Peace campaign in the spring of 2009, raising more than
 $1,000 in pennies; the donation paid for an area teacher's salary
 for one year, as well as for five students' school supplies, a
 scholarship, two sewing machines and materials, and more than 400
 pencils; kindergarteners through fifth-grade students saved spare
 change and held bake sales to raise funds; and
 WHEREAS, Ably led by principal Brenda Cruz, Grandview Hills
 further prepares its students for today's global society by
 offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme,
 and it is the first elementary school in the Leander Independent
 School District to do so; and
 WHEREAS, Through their involvement in Pennies for Peace,
 Grandview Hills students are gaining a greater understanding of
 other cultures and economic disparities around the world, and they
 are helping to make a difference in many young lives; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby honor the students of Grandview Hills Elementary
 School for their participation in the Pennies for Peace initiative
 and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and,
 be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
