H.R. No. 1688 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A 60th wedding anniversary is a celebration of love that has stood the test of time, and six decades after their wedding in 1951, Douglas and Angela Boren of Lubbock continue to bring out the best in one another and to inspire all who share in the richness of their lives; and WHEREAS, Douglas Boren and the former Angela Rattan were joined in matrimony on March 25, 1951, at a ceremony held at the First Methodist Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico; this esteemed couple have made their home for many years in Lubbock, where they have contributed in myriad ways to the life of their community; and WHEREAS, Both are alumni of Texas Tech University, and Mrs. Boren holds two degrees from that school, a bachelor's in home economics education and a master's in food and nutrition; after attending Texas Tech as a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, Mr. Boren pursued studies in banking at Harvard, Columbia, and Northwestern Universities; and WHEREAS, Mr. Boren retired from Plains National Bank as a senior vice president; he currently serves as chair of the Carillon Senior LifeCare Community Board of Directors, and he has also chaired the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce executive committee and served on the board of the Silent Wings Museum and on the president's advisory board of Lubbock Christian University; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Boren was an assistant professor in the Texas Tech College of Home Economics and later the College of Human Sciences for more than two decades, from 1960 to 1982; in addition, she has taught elementary and high school students, served as a nutrition education consultant for Hawaiian home economics teachers, the Texas Education Agency, and Texas Tech, and reviewed manuscripts for the Journal of Nutrition Education and for Macmillan Publishing Company; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Boren have each sat on the Texas Tech Foundation Board of Directors; moreover, Mr. Boren has held a seat on the university's executive committee and been a member of its museum association, while Mrs. Boren has chaired the alumni relations committee of the Dean's Advisory Council; the couple have further supported their alma mater through the creation of several scholarship endowments, and they are members of the Spur and Matador Societies and the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle; their enthusiasm and generosity have been recognized with Lifetime Distinguished Service Awards, and in 2010 they were inducted into the Texas Tech Athletics Hall of Legacy; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Boren have enjoyed six decades of abiding love and affection for one another, and they are among an exceptional group of men and women who can claim such a lasting commitment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Douglas and Angela Boren on their 60th wedding anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the couple as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
