H.R. No. 1733 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, In an impressive display of agility and precision, The University of Texas at El Paso claimed its first-ever National Cheerleaders Association Co-Ed Division Championship at the College Nationals competition, which took place April 6-9, 2011; and WHEREAS, The 19-member Miners team, accompanied by mascot Paydirt Pete, competed against 12 other universities at the event in Daytona Beach, Florida; the determined UTEP squad bested such cheerleading powerhouses as the University of Michigan, Marshall University, and the University of Central Oklahoma, winner of the previous four national championships; and WHEREAS, The team members dedicated their performance to Ronny Jo Villarreal, a 2001 UTEP graduate and a former captain of the cheerleading squad, who had recently passed away after a battle with breast cancer; Ms. Villarreal had visited the team in 2010 and inspired them with a message of strength and perseverance; and WHEREAS, Winning a national championship represents the culmination of countless hours of hard work and an enduring commitment to excellence, and these talented competitors and Miners head coach, David Vasquez, may take justifiable pride in this accomplishment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate The University of Texas at El Paso cheerleading team on winning the 2011 National Cheerleaders Association Co-Ed Division Championship and extend to its members sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the squad as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
