H.R. No. 177 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The important role that professional social workers play in furthering the well-being of Texas residents is indeed worthy of appreciation, and their contributions are being honored during March 2011 with the observance of Professional Social Work Month; and WHEREAS, These admirable professionals assist individuals, families, and groups, and they make a positive difference in their communities; there are more than 640,000 trained social workers employed in the United States, carrying out their duties in a variety of settings, including public agencies, hospice organizations, schools, universities, private practices, corporations, and the military; and WHEREAS, Only those highly trained individuals who have earned social work degrees at the bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level are eligible to become professional social workers; in addition, social workers in Texas must complete a required number of supervised hours in their particular field and are licensed through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners; and WHEREAS, The profession was established more than 100 years ago, and through the decades its members have helped Americans to deal with issues such as poverty, illness, addiction, abuse, discrimination, divorce, and unemployment; in so doing, they have helped countless people to overcome significant challenges and lead more fulfilling and productive lives; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby recognize March 2011 as Professional Social Work Month and commend the members of this vital profession for their hard work and many achievements; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Texas chapter of the National Association of Social Workers as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
