H.R. No. 1853 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to a close when Alfred Richard Castello of Austin passed away on April 19, 2011, at the age of 80; and WHEREAS, Born in Houston on March 13, 1931, to Alfred and Alice Castello, Al Castello graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston; he attended the Maryknoll Seminary in Chicago for several years, until he came to the realization that the priesthood was not his calling; he then moved to Austin and enrolled at The University of Texas, where he earned a bachelor's degree in math and physics; and WHEREAS, Mr. Castello met his wife, the former Dolores Vacek, while attending UT, and they were joined in matrimony on August 29, 1954; the couple shared 56 years together and were blessed with 6 children, as well as 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, After finishing college, Mr. Castello, or "Chief" as he was affectionately known, joined the newly formed computer division of the Texas Department of Transportation; during his distinguished 38 years with that agency, he advanced through its ranks and served in a number of different roles; in 1990, he received the Raymond E. Stotzer, Jr., Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership, dedication, and service by a department employee who is not a professional engineer; Mr. Castello retired in 1991 as deputy director of support operations; and WHEREAS, Throughout his life, this caring gentleman continued to be guided by his deep and abiding faith, and those who were privileged to share in his love and friendship will forever hold him close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Alfred Richard Castello and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife, Dolores Castello; to his children and their spouses, Mary Castello, Rick and Sheryl Castello, Jim and Diana Castello, Barbara and Dan Williamson, Chris and Nan Castello, and Catherine and Doug Bush; to his 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alfred Castello.
