H.R. No. 2070 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Victoria Johnson has been named the 2011 Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Mission Consolidated Independent School District; and WHEREAS, A sixth-grade science teacher at Alton Memorial Junior High School, Victoria Johnson has spent her entire 24-year career in the Mission CISD; she attended Sam Houston State University and Texas A&M University before earning her bachelor's degree from The University of Texas--Pan American in 1976 and her elementary certification the following year; she also holds certifications in pre-Advanced Placement science, English as a Second Language, and gifted and talented education; and WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson began her career as an educator in 1977 at Pearson Elementary in Mission; hired to teach math, social studies, and science, she soon discovered that teaching science was her passion; although she interrupted her career for 10 years to focus on raising her family, she returned to the Mission CISD in 1990, when she joined the faculty at Marcell Elementary; for 8 of her 13 years there, she served as a teacher for HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed), a program that enlisted the help of the community to give students weekly tutoring sessions in reading; she later went on to teach at Cavazos Elementary for five years before transferring to Alton Memorial Junior High in 2008; and WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson uses peer tutoring to reinforce classroom lessons and ensure that students understand difficult concepts; she also collaborates with other science teachers and attends workshops to learn ways to best motivate young people; previously recognized with Outstanding Teacher awards from graduating migrant seniors in 2004 and 2010, she also received a tutoring program award in 1996; and WHEREAS, A coach and a judge with the University Interscholastic League, Ms. Johnson has further contributed to her professional community as a curriculum and standards writer, as a Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System rater, and as a member of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association, the Association of Texas Professional Educators, the Rio Grande Valley Science Association, and the Science Teachers Association of Texas; and WHEREAS, Victoria Johnson's dedication to her profession and her unwavering commitment to the young people of Mission have set an inspiring example for her students and colleagues alike, and she is indeed worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Victoria Johnson on her selection as the 2011 Mission Consolidated Independent School District Secondary Teacher of the Year and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success with her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
