H.R. No. 2797 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Karen Marx has been named the 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year by the Dallas Independent School District; and WHEREAS, A geometry teacher at North Dallas High School, Ms. Marx distinguishes herself with her leadership, creativity, and compassion; after dropping out of college and struggling as a single mother, she returned to school and earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a minor in mathematics at The University of Texas at Arlington in 2002; and WHEREAS, That same year, Ms. Marx joined the Duncanville Independent School District as a ninth-grade algebra teacher; she began teaching algebra for Dallas ISD in 2004 and then served the district for a time as an instructional mathematics coach; and WHEREAS, In 2008, Ms. Marx returned to the classroom, where she uses movement as a tool to teach math in such innovative activities as "algebra aerobics," "rotation reviews," and "four-corner answers"; her supervisors credit her with significantly raising the school's 10th-grade geometry scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test; Ms. Marx is currently working toward a master's degree in applied cognition and neuroscience at The University of Texas at Dallas; and WHEREAS, Teachers play a vital role in preparing the next generation of Texans for the challenges and opportunities of the future, and Karen Marx has worked to instill in her students a lifelong love of learning that will serve them well throughout their lives; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Karen Marx on being named the 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year by the Dallas Independent School District and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Marx as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
