H.R. No. 437 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Since 1993, Court Appointed Special Advocates from CASA of the South Plains have helped more than 5,000 area children in need; and WHEREAS, CASA advocates serve as guardians ad litem, looking out for the best interests of children suffering from abuse or neglect; they are appointed by judges to watch over these children and to ensure that they get the attention they deserve in the often overburdened legal, social service, and foster care systems; and WHEREAS, Originally known as CASA of Lubbock, CASA of the South Plains changed its name in 2000 to reflect its geographic expansion; the program began with two employees and today has 13 full-time employees and approximately 150 advocates who serve children in courts in Cochran, Hale, Hockley, Terry, and Yoakum Counties; and WHEREAS, CASA of the South Plains helped place 263 children in safe homes during 2009, and advocates donated more than 7,000 hours of their time; in addition, 55 new volunteers were trained that year; 2010 brought numerous accomplishments, including such successful fund-raising efforts as the third Speak Up For Kids 5K, Casas for CASA, and the Champions for Children Fund-raising Breakfast; and WHEREAS, Through their compassion, dedication, and hard work, CASA of the South Plains advocates have made a positive and lasting impact in the lives of children and families in their communities, and it is indeed fitting to honor them for their commitment to the young people of Texas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby commend the members of CASA of the South Plains for their service and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success with their important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for CASA of the South Plains as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
