H.R. No. 543 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The family and friends of Eugene Calabro of El Paso were greatly saddened by his passing on February 7, 2011, at the age of 86; and WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, New York, Gene Calabro served his country with distinction during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War; his career included 25 years as an army criminal investigator and more than two decades as an ROTC instructor and administrator with the Ysleta Independent School District; and WHEREAS, Mr. Calabro was a talented bowler, and his passion for the sport led him to play an integral role in bringing the 2010 U.S. Bowling Congress Women's Championships to El Paso; lasting nearly 100 days and drawing more than 30,000 participants, the tournament benefited the local economy and earned Mr. Calabro the Spirit of Amigo Award from the El Paso Convention & Visitors Bureau; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Calabro also received recognition from Special Olympics Texas and the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame, El Paso Bowling Hall of Fame, Kegler Association International, Freeway Keglers, and Texas State Association United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Calabro shared his time with a number of worthwhile groups, including the board of Crime Stoppers, the United States Army Warrant Officers Association, the Military Order of the World Wars, and Disabled American Veterans; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoyed the support of a loving family that included his wife, Susan, his sons, Eugene Calabro, Jr., and Joel White, and his daughters, Mauri Whitehurst and Julie Duncan; and WHEREAS, Gene Calabro lived a caring and purposeful life, and he will be deeply missed by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Eugene Calabro, Sr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Susan Calabro; to his sons, Eugene Calabro, Jr., and Joel White; to his daughters, Mauri Whitehurst and Julie Duncan; to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gene Calabro.
