66 WHEREAS, A century ago, the devoted alumni of Texas A&M
77 University began to gather each year on San Jacinto Day to salute
88 Texas independence, and in 1922 this annual event was enshrined as
99 the official tradition of Aggie Muster, a day on which all alumni
1010 and students would gather to reminisce about their days at their
1111 beloved alma mater and to pay special tribute to those among them
1212 who had died in the previous year; and
1313 WHEREAS, This tradition gained worldwide recognition in
1414 1942, during World War II; led by General George Moore of the class
1515 of 1908, 25 Aggie servicemen risked their lives during the Japanese
1616 siege of Corregidor to participate in Aggie Muster, a remarkable
1717 display of their shared beliefs and values; since that time, Aggie
1818 Muster has continued to grow in popularity and in significance, and
1919 today there are observances held in more than 400 locations around
2020 the world; and
2121 WHEREAS, Aggie Muster is a poignant and heartfelt remembrance
2222 of those Aggies who have passed away in the previous year, and the
2323 legislature is pleased to salute the students, alumni, and
2424 representatives of Texas A&M University who, through their
2525 participation, exemplify the Lone Star State's spirit of
2626 friendship, courage, and compassion; now, therefore, be it
2727 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
2828 Legislature, in accordance with the rules and policies of the
2929 Committee on House Administration, hereby grant permission to Texas
3030 Aggie Muster to use the house chamber on April 21, 2011, from 6 p.m.
3131 to 10 p.m., unless the Texas House of Representatives is in session
3232 at that time.
