H.R. No. 768 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, El Paso native Omar Salgado furthered his reputation as a promising young soccer star when he became the first player selected in the Major League Soccer 2011 SuperDraft, which took place on January 13; and WHEREAS, The 17-year-old striker was chosen by the Vancouver Whitecaps at the annual event in which the league's 18 clubs choose among the best amateur players; and WHEREAS, The youngest of the 54 athletes taken in the SuperDraft, Mr. Salgado is known for his instincts and speed; he began his career in Mexico, where he played youth soccer for Club Deportivo Guadalajara and was a member of the Mexican under-17 and under-20 national teams; and WHEREAS, In 2010, he joined the United States under-20 team and that same year helped it win the Milk Cup, an international competition played in Northern Ireland; he has further honed his skills by working out with Major League Soccer teams and with the Everton Football Club of the English Premier League; and WHEREAS, Possessing world-class talent at such a young age is a rare gift, and the residents of Texas are justifiably proud of Omar Salgado and will be closely following his progress as he competes in one of North America's premier soccer leagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Omar Salgado for being the first player selected in the Major League Soccer 2011 SuperDraft and extend to him sincere best wishes for a successful future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Salgado as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
