H.R. No. 772 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the death of James Edward Barrs of Houston on February 6, 2011, at the age of 61; and WHEREAS, Born on January 14, 1950, James Barrs enjoyed the companionship of two sisters and two brothers while growing up in the Fifth Ward and Pleasantville communities in the Bayou City; he excelled at a host of activities in his youth and was a standout football player at Phillis Wheatley High School, Napa Valley College, and Texas Southern University; and WHEREAS, James Barrs met his wife, the former Jacqueline "Sweetie" Landry, while in high school, and the couple shared a rewarding marriage of some four decades; blessed with two beloved children, Mr. Barrs relished his roles as husband and father; and WHEREAS, A gifted leader, Mr. Barrs enjoyed a successful career as a project manager, and he established many cherished friendships with his colleagues at GB Biosciences, ExxonMobil, and Hudson Engineering; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan believed deeply in the importance of education and academic excellence; through his affiliation with the 100 Black Catholic Men and Women organization, he worked on many projects to fund scholarships for Catholic youth; in addition to his philanthropic work, he loved travel and family vacations, and he was a lifelong connoisseur of jazz; and WHEREAS, With his strong faith and zest for life, James Barrs lived a caring and purposeful life, and he will forever hold a treasured place in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Edward Barrs and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife, Jacqueline Barrs; to his children, James Edward Barrs II and Tracie Nicole Barrs; to his mother and stepfather, Mary and Lloyd James; to his brothers, John Charles Barrs and Dr. Lloyd James and his wife, Viola; to his sister, Ethel Mayweather, and her husband, Arthur; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of James Edward Barrs.
