H.R. No. 819 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Lubbock resident Harold Dennis Long, who died on February 22, 2011, at the age of 77; and WHEREAS, Harold Long was born in Crosby County on June 25, 1933, to Buster and Allie Long; he grew up in Hale County and moved in 1944 to Lubbock, where he graduated from high school in 1951; and WHEREAS, Mr. Long was an independent businessman who began his own excavation company a few years after high school and ran it for two decades, and he went on to become a successful custom home builder for the next 39 years; knowledgeable in his field, he was a member of the West Texas Home Builders Association and the National Association of Home Builders; and WHEREAS, He was devoted to his family and shared a fulfilling relationship with his wife of 57 years, LaWanda Jean; he was also the father of three children, LaVenda, LaQuita, and William, and he and his wife were blessed with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Mr. Long was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness in 1950, and he remained a man of strong religious faith for the rest of his life; in his leisure time, he enjoyed golf and fine wine, and he loved to explore the world with Mrs. Long, traveling with her to 44 countries; and WHEREAS, Harold Long lived a full and generous life, and cherished memories of time spent in his company will forever endure in the hearts of his family and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Harold Dennis Long and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife, LaWanda Jean Long; to his daughters, LaVenda Jo Lee and her husband, Steve, and LaQuita Kay Beck and her husband, Rodney; to his grandchildren, Brandi Stansifer and her husband, Zac, Clifford Ross and his wife, Cassandra, Jordan Ross and his wife, Tara, and Megan Spykes; to his great-grandchildren, Lily Ross, Augustine Ross, and Ariah Spykes; to his brother and sister, Gerald Long and Betty Hargis; to his uncle, John Moore; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Harold Dennis Long.
