H.R. No. 890 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The citizens of Del Rio lost a beloved community leader with the passing of Juan S. Olivares, Jr., on January 19, 2011, at the age of 81; and WHEREAS, A native of Del Rio, Johnny Olivares was born on October 21, 1929, to Juan and Dolores Olivares; he earned his bachelor's degree from Sul Ross State University, where he also completed his master's degree and received mid-management certification; and WHEREAS, Mr. Olivares had a distinguished career in education, serving as a teacher, as a principal, and as a member of the human resources department of the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District, and his efforts helped many students and educators; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan also gave back through his contributions to a number of worthwhile initiatives, including the Val Verde Regional Medical Center board, which he served as chair; and WHEREAS, In 1954, Mr. Olivares joined the San Felipe Lions Club, beginning an association that would span more than half a century; over the years, he held every office in the club, and he further served the organization in the roles of cabinet secretary, deputy governor-at-large, and governor of District 2-A2 and council treasurer of MD-2 Texas; and WHEREAS, Mr. Olivares was recognized time and again for his exceptional efforts in behalf of Lions Clubs International; in addition to earning the titles of Life Member, Lion of the Year, Melvin Jones Fellow, and Jack Weich Fellow, he received the International President's Certificate of Appreciation and the International President's Medal of Merit; his accomplishments were also honored in 2005, when he was inducted into the District 2-A2 Herb C. Petry, Jr., Hall of Fame, and in 2009, when the San Felipe Lions Center was dedicated in his honor; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Olivares enjoyed the support of a loving family; married for 55 years to Kathryn Olivares, he was devoted to his children, Mary and Juan, to his grandson and granddaughter, and to his two great-granddaughters; and WHEREAS, Johnny Olivares led an accomplished, purposeful life, and although he will be deeply missed, his legacy of service to his fellow residents will long resonate in the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Juan S. Olivares, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Kathryn Olivares; to his daughter, Mary Lozano, and her husband, Roy; to his son, Juan "Trey" Olivares III; to his grandchildren, John and Kristian Arredondo; to his great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Alessia Arredondo; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Juan Olivares.
