H.R. No. 99 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The First United Methodist Church of Buna has received an official Texas State Historical Marker in recognition of its long and notable history; and WHEREAS, In January 1904, Tex Rogers and James, John, Ethel, and Minnie Hancock came together to establish a Methodist church; services were held in the town's schoolhouse until 1922, when the congregation dedicated the building and community hall it continues to occupy to this day; through the years, a number of additions have been made to the structure to meet the growing needs of its members; and WHEREAS, The house of worship has provided area residents with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and community outreach, supporting such worthwhile programs as the Epworth League, United Methodist Women and Men, and Methodist Youth Fellowship; and WHEREAS, The First United Methodist Church has played a significant role in Buna, and recognition by the Texas Historical Commission is a tribute to the unwavering commitment of its congregants, both past and present, to their church and their community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of a Texas State Historical Marker for the First United Methodist Church of Buna and extend to its members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
