77 relating to certain unclaimed property of veterans and veterans'
88 families.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 434.007, Government Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 Sec. 434.007. DUTIES. The commission shall:
1313 (1) compile federal, state, and local laws enacted to
1414 benefit members of the armed forces, veterans, and their families
1515 and dependents;
1616 (2) collect information relating to services and
1717 facilities available to veterans;
1818 (3) cooperate with veterans service agencies in the
1919 state;
2020 (4) inform members and veterans of the armed forces,
2121 their families and dependents, and military and civilian
2222 authorities about the existence or availability of:
2323 (A) educational training and retraining
2424 facilities;
2525 (B) health, medical, rehabilitation, and housing
2626 services and facilities;
2727 (C) employment and reemployment services;
2828 (D) provisions of federal, state, and local law
2929 affording rights, privileges, and benefits to members and veterans
3030 of the armed forces and their families and dependents; and
3131 (E) other similar, related, or appropriate
3232 matters;
3333 (5) assist veterans and their families and dependents
3434 in presenting, proving, and establishing claims, privileges,
3535 rights, and benefits they may have under federal, state, or local
3636 law;
3737 (6) cooperate with all government and private agencies
3838 securing services or benefits to veterans and their families and
3939 dependents;
4040 (7) investigate, and if possible correct, abuses or
4141 exploitation of veterans or their families or dependents, and
4242 recommend necessary legislation for full correction;
4343 (8) coordinate the services and activities of state
4444 departments and divisions having services and resources affecting
4545 veterans or their families or dependents;
4646 (9) provide training and certification of veterans
4747 county service officers and assistant veterans county service
4848 officers in accordance with Section 434.038; [and]
4949 (10) through surveys or other reasonable and accurate
5050 methods of estimation, collect and maintain for each county in the
5151 state the number of servicemembers and veterans residing in the
5252 county and annually update and publish the information on the
5353 commission's website; and
5454 (11) with the assistance and cooperation of the
5555 comptroller, inform and assist veterans and their families and
5656 dependents with respect to discovering and initiating claims for
5757 unclaimed property held by the United States Department of Veterans
5858 Affairs.
5959 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
6060 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
6161 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
6262 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
6363 Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
