7 | 7 | | relating to certain unclaimed property of veterans and veterans' |
---|
8 | 8 | | families. |
---|
9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 434.007, Government Code, is amended to |
---|
11 | 11 | | read as follows: |
---|
12 | 12 | | Sec. 434.007. DUTIES. The commission shall: |
---|
13 | 13 | | (1) compile federal, state, and local laws enacted to |
---|
14 | 14 | | benefit members of the armed forces, veterans, and their families |
---|
15 | 15 | | and dependents; |
---|
16 | 16 | | (2) collect information relating to services and |
---|
17 | 17 | | facilities available to veterans; |
---|
18 | 18 | | (3) cooperate with veterans service agencies in the |
---|
19 | 19 | | state; |
---|
20 | 20 | | (4) inform members and veterans of the armed forces, |
---|
21 | 21 | | their families and dependents, and military and civilian |
---|
22 | 22 | | authorities about the existence or availability of: |
---|
23 | 23 | | (A) educational training and retraining |
---|
24 | 24 | | facilities; |
---|
25 | 25 | | (B) health, medical, rehabilitation, and housing |
---|
26 | 26 | | services and facilities; |
---|
27 | 27 | | (C) employment and reemployment services; |
---|
28 | 28 | | (D) provisions of federal, state, and local law |
---|
29 | 29 | | affording rights, privileges, and benefits to members and veterans |
---|
30 | 30 | | of the armed forces and their families and dependents; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | (E) other similar, related, or appropriate |
---|
32 | 32 | | matters; |
---|
33 | 33 | | (5) assist veterans and their families and dependents |
---|
34 | 34 | | in presenting, proving, and establishing claims, privileges, |
---|
35 | 35 | | rights, and benefits they may have under federal, state, or local |
---|
36 | 36 | | law; |
---|
37 | 37 | | (6) cooperate with all government and private agencies |
---|
38 | 38 | | securing services or benefits to veterans and their families and |
---|
39 | 39 | | dependents; |
---|
40 | 40 | | (7) investigate, and if possible correct, abuses or |
---|
41 | 41 | | exploitation of veterans or their families or dependents, and |
---|
42 | 42 | | recommend necessary legislation for full correction; |
---|
43 | 43 | | (8) coordinate the services and activities of state |
---|
44 | 44 | | departments and divisions having services and resources affecting |
---|
45 | 45 | | veterans or their families or dependents; |
---|
46 | 46 | | (9) provide training and certification of veterans |
---|
47 | 47 | | county service officers and assistant veterans county service |
---|
48 | 48 | | officers in accordance with Section 434.038; [and] |
---|
49 | 49 | | (10) through surveys or other reasonable and accurate |
---|
50 | 50 | | methods of estimation, collect and maintain for each county in the |
---|
51 | 51 | | state the number of servicemembers and veterans residing in the |
---|
52 | 52 | | county and annually update and publish the information on the |
---|
53 | 53 | | commission's website; and |
---|
54 | 54 | | (11) with the assistance and cooperation of the |
---|
55 | 55 | | comptroller, inform and assist veterans and their families and |
---|
56 | 56 | | dependents with respect to discovering and initiating claims for |
---|
57 | 57 | | unclaimed property held by the United States Department of Veterans |
---|
58 | 58 | | Affairs. |
---|
59 | 59 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
60 | 60 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
61 | 61 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
62 | 62 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
63 | 63 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2011. |
