66 AN ACT
77 relating to duties and restrictions regarding the special Texas
88 Rangers.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 411.023, Government Code, is amended by
1111 amending Subsection (b) and adding Subsection (g) to read as
1212 follows:
1313 (b) A special ranger is subject to the orders of the
1414 commission and the governor for special duty to the same extent as
1515 other law enforcement officers provided for by this chapter, except
1616 that a special ranger may not enforce a law [except one designed to
1717 protect life and property and may not enforce a law] regulating the
1818 use of a state highway by a motor vehicle. A special ranger is not
1919 connected with a ranger company or uniformed unit of the
2020 department.
2121 (g) The director may call special rangers into service to:
2222 (1) preserve the peace and protect life and property;
2323 (2) conduct background investigations;
2424 (3) monitor sex offenders;
2525 (4) serve as part of two-officer units on patrol in
2626 high threat areas; and
2727 (5) provide assistance to the department during
2828 disasters.
2929 SECTION 2. Section 411.024, Government Code, is amended by
3030 amending Subsection (b) and adding Subsection (g) to read as
3131 follows:
3232 (b) A special Texas Ranger is subject to the orders of the
3333 commission and the governor for special duty to the same extent as
3434 other law enforcement officers provided for by this chapter, except
3535 that a special Texas Ranger may not enforce a law [except one
3636 designed to protect life and property and may not enforce a law]
3737 regulating the use of a state highway by a motor vehicle. A special
3838 Texas Ranger is not connected with a ranger company or uniformed
3939 unit of the department.
4040 (g) The director may call special Texas Rangers into service
4141 to:
4242 (1) preserve the peace and protect life and property;
4343 (2) conduct background investigations;
4444 (3) monitor sex offenders;
4545 (4) serve as part of two-officer units on patrol in
4646 high threat areas; and
4747 (5) provide assistance to the department during
4848 disasters.
4949 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
