77 relating to including a personal financial literacy component in
88 public school mathematics instruction.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subsection (a), Section 28.0021, Education Code,
1111 is amended to read as follows:
1212 (a) The Texas essential knowledge and skills and, as
1313 applicable, Section 28.025 shall require instruction in personal
1414 financial literacy in:
1515 (1) mathematics instruction in kindergarten through
1616 grade eight; and
1717 (2) one or more courses required for high school
1818 graduation.
1919 SECTION 2. Subsection (a), Section 31.0231, Education Code,
2020 is amended to read as follows:
2121 (a) The commissioner shall adopt a list of:
2222 (1) electronic textbooks; and
2323 (2) instructional material that conveys information
2424 to the student or otherwise contributes to the learning process,
2525 including tools, models, and investigative materials designed for
2626 use as part of the foundation curriculum for:
2727 (A) science in kindergarten through grade five;
2828 and
2929 (B) personal financial literacy in kindergarten
3030 through grade eight.
3131 SECTION 3. For purposes of the textbook review and adoption
3232 requirements under Section 31.022, Education Code, the State Board
3333 of Education shall review and adopt mathematics textbooks that
3434 satisfy the requirements of Section 28.0021, Education Code, as
3535 amended by this Act, on the next scheduled review and adoption cycle
3636 for mathematics textbooks after the effective date of this Act.
3737 SECTION 4. This Act applies beginning with the 2011-2012
3838 school year.
3939 SECTION 5. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4040 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4141 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4242 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4343 Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
